Hampton Inn Linden, NJ
NYC via NJ in 3 days!
Among many ways of visiting New York, staying in New Jersey and commuting in to The Big Apple via car, train or bus remains a viable option. With a stay limited to three days and on a very limited budget, your best values are not exactly easy to find, but they're out there. The wife was fortunate in finding this gem of a hotel just south of Newark and the staff played a great part in making a trip from hell into an adventure worthy of documenting.
Let me just say that almost everything that could have gone wrong with this trip, did. It all started when we took the Jet Blue "red-eye" from Los Angeles to Boston connecting to Newark... we land in Boston and the Captain of our flight gets on the intercom and says something to the effect of, "Good morning. We have a bunch of folks trying to catch a connection to ___________ and we'd like to let them de-plane first so they don't miss their connection," etc... etc... so we all stand around letting a few people get off our plane and they move very slowly because they have to get everyone out of their way... so by the time everyone else gets to de-plane and we get to our connection, they have already CLOSED THE GATE, even though it was 15 minutes early! So now, it's 8:30 AM, myself and my family of four tired, hungry, cranky Filippino ladies are stuck in Logan Airport until the next flight eventually arrives at 5:40 PM to take us to Newark. JET BLUE gave us less than $10 total each in food vouchers to cover both our breakfasts and dinners and refused to even consider letting us stay in their VIP club for the day. This was our first and LAST trip with JET BLUE as we will NEVER AGAIN book with an airline that treats its customers this badly, but this is not an airline review, so you can read that one later...
So, after wasting our first day stuck at Logan airport due to JET BLUE's idoiocy, we finally get to the Newark Airport and call for the courtesy van from the Hampton Inn, Linden. It was there within minutes and while there were lines of people waiting for their shuttle vans, we were picked up and whisked away to Linden in no time! Let me take a moment to remind fellow travelers to TIP YOUR SHUTTLE DRIVERS! Even is if it is a "free" shuttle, the drivers from this Hampton Inn went out of their way to take care of us. Even when we forgot what entrance we were supposed to meet at after spending a great rainy day at the Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall in nearby Elizabeth, NJ. Yes, the shuttle takes you there and picks you up, but make SURE you remember the correct entrance you get dropped off at, or the driver will miss you! (I recommend writing it down before you go into the mall.)
So, even though the machinations of airline and weather kept us from seeing many of the things we wanted to see, like the Statue of Liberty, being flexible and with the help of the staff at this Hampton Inn, specifically Ms. Dierma Betances, the Front Desk Manager, we were able to salvage some fun memories from what was a depressing mini-vacation. This manager and her staff went WAY above and beyond the call of duty to take care of us and they kept their promise! If you're not satisfied in any way with your stay, they will do everything they can to make it right and in the world of travel, sometimes that's the best you can ask for. The hotel was very clean, except for the chairs in our rooms, which they need to replace ASAP! The FREE BREAKFASTS were great. Great location. (Be sure to study up on the Amtrak schedules at the nearby train station), and you will have a great stay no matter what happens!
