On the Riverwalk

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on April 26, 2014

Historic & beautiful hotel on the Riverwalk & steps from the Alamo and attractions. Room was small, no view but quiet and beautifully appointed. Continental breakfast was tasty & better than the usual big chain buffet. Front desk was always busy on the phones & the concierge was never around to find.

Unique Quality: Historic & location

Directions: On the Riverwalk and East Houston near Alamo, attractions & restaurants

The Sheraton Gunter is a historic hotel with a beautiful lobby and entrance as seen on the pictures; unfortunately, do not be fooled all by the pictures. Everything appears to be clean and plush; however, the rooms are not what they are cracked up to be. The rooms are small, the bathroom extremely dysfunctional. The sink, toilet, and tub might as well been one. They were right on top of each other. The bathroom door could not even be opened completely do to the towel rack directly behind the door. There was hair stuck to the wallpaper which too looked old and mildew. The towels were wet due to the ridiculous humidity in the room. Everything smelled of mildew because of the wetness in the air. The carpet was dirty and stained. The curtains were also stained and would not close completely; therefore, the morning sun glared into the room. I hate to be so negative but everything is true. I spoke to other guest (members of our conference) which all agreed. Because of the Sheraton is a Historic landmark it really needs to be renovated to keep this hotel operational and functional for its guest. On a positive side the staff was fantastic. They were courteous and helpful. However, the great staff could not out way the overall problems with the hotel. I would never recommend this hotel in the condition it is in now.

Unique Quality: Staff was good

Historical Lodging

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on May 30, 2007

As with many historical buildings that offer accomodations, they can reflect a period of time and not current trends. This place has small bathrooms however the room itself was large.
The wireless internet access was disappointing and I stayed away from the parking service due to the $24/day cost. There were many options close by that were far more reasonable.

Unique Quality: The pool and gym were minimal regardless of how the pictures appear in the pictures!
On the first day of my trip I tried out the buffet lunch in what's called Barrons and it was a fabulous deal - lots of smoked seafood to choose from!

Cowboy Chic Hotel

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on December 1, 2004

Originally built in 1909, this hotel has been thouroughly renovated and restored and is now operated by the Sheraton chain. Rooms are smallish, but nicely decorated. Most of the original fixtures, designs, etc are still evident. Off to one side of the lobby they even have the original hand-operated switchboard on display. Overall a nice part of the San Antonio experience.

Unique Quality: Located in downtown San Antonio, across the street from the Majestic Theater, which makes it very convenient for all the Riverwalk activities.

Directions: Downtown, about 4 blocks from the Alamo.

On March 25th and 26th I stayed at the Sheraton Gunter in San Antonio. I had a great stay but when I checked out I noticed a theft problem from the valet. I contacted loss prevention immediately and sent the following email. It has been almost a month and no response. I posted the letter to the hotels review sight and it was never posted. I wonder what else they don't want us to know.
Dear Sirs or Madam,
My name is Douglas XXXXXX and I just spent a wonderful couple of nights at the Sheraton Gunter in San Antonio TX. My stay was great until the very end and then my perception of the Sheraton hotel brand was tarnished. We stayed in room 625 which was clean and comfortable. The location was great and the staff was super helpful and friendly. The problem came when I picked my car up that I had entrusted to the valet May 25 at about 1 pm. I had just purchased a half pound of buffalo jerky and had eaten 2 strips before I left the car with the valet. The rest of the jerky was placed on the console between the seats. The car did not leave the garage my entire stay. When I picked my car up on May 27 at 10 am. the jerky was gone. I stopped in New Braunfels and checked the car to make sure the jerky had not shifted out of sight. I then called the front desk and was connected with loss prevention. The loss prevention agent offered me a paltry good faith gesture of 2 free days parking for my trouble. I travel a lot and take great pains to remove items from my car that may be irresistible to someone who is economically challenged. But $20.00 worth of jerky...I don't know what to say. My faith in your brand has been damaged. Please look into this complaint and let me know how you wish to proceed.
Thank You
