Additional Info on Visiting a Dude Ranch

by written on August 26, 2002

There are a number of dude ranches along the highway between Cody and the East Gate of Yellowstone, as well as in other mountain valleys around the Cody Country. For a list of ranches, and links to most of these ranches, visit
www.codychamber.org

Not being familiar with most of these, I cannot recommend which ones are the best. I am including The Absaroka Mountain Lodge, just because this is a good comparison ranch when compared to the two previous ones I have reviewed. This is a different type of ranch than the all inclusive ones I had some knowledge of, and reviewed above. I am including this, not as a recommendation, but as something to consider when choosing a ranch to stay in. This type of ranch is a rent a cabin, and pay extra for other major activities.
The Absaroka Mountain Lodge, www.absarokamtlodge.com, is located in the Shoshone National Forest near the eastern side of Yellowstone National Park. The valley is a very beautiful one with rugged mountains, pine forest, and mountain streams. Teddy Roosevelt once described this valley as “One of the most scenic in America”. Here you may spot bear, elk, deer, moose, big horn sheep, or bison, which have wandered out of the park. Horseback riding and fishing are the main activates at this ranch, but hiking wilderness trails or taking excursions into Yellowstone, which is only 15 miles away are also possible. Be aware, however, that in Cody Country, snow melt can turn streams into rushing torrents in the spring, making fishing impossible. The main lodge has WiFi available, so if you hate to be with out your technology, you will find that a plus to this choice for your stay.

The rate charged is on a daily basis and does not include horseback riding, or your meals. For meals you will order off of a menu, and pay just as you would in any restaurant. This can add substantially to the cost, so when comparing with other Dude Ranchs, be sure to consider which are all inclusive, and which have a number of additional fees. If you don't intend on horseback riding, then the type of a ranch that charges for your cabin, but then charges extra for a lot of other things may be more economical for you. The upkeep and insurance for running trail rides is expensive, so when you choose an all inclusive ranch, the cost of the rides is of course factored in. On the al-a-cart type ranch, riding can add up quickly if you want to partake in the activity a number of times. If it is a pay for your cabin, and then pay separate for other things, take a look at the menus that most of these will include on their web pages, so that you can factor in the added cost of your meals. You may find that the all inclusive ranches, that sound so expensive, are really a good deal if you plan on making the most of your Dude Ranch stay.

One advantage this type of ranch has over the other two that I reviewed is that you can stay for only one or two nights, rather than having to make your stay a longer one.
