Shenkin Hostel: Good hostel in Copacabana
My friend stayed here and really liked it. He left Rio and came back only to go back to this hostel. This hostel is also very social with a bar of it's own. I met up with him there for a beer and met a ton of people. The people who work there are also fairly helpful and there is no curfew
free breakfast, Internet, lockers, kitchen, bar, close to everything in Copacabana, common room

Residencial Apartt: Residencial Apartt
Some of the colleagues of the course that I attended lodged in here and I found it really nice. It was really well located in Arpoador area, really calmed and not expensive as Ipanema, just three blocks away, or Copacabana, two blocks away). Half a block away is also the bus station, where you can take buses that drive you to the rest of Copacabana, Rio Sul Shopping Center, Botafogo, Flamengo, the rodoviaria (bus station for going outside Rio) and even the airport!
The apartments are nice and comfortable and besides the bathroom and bed it has a little living room and kitchen. Although the prices of the website goes from US$35-45, you can make special deals if it's low season or you have a longer stay.

Rent an Apartment: Check Out Classified Ads of Brazilian Newspapers!
Renting an apartment was an ideal option for me, since I wanted so badly a place for just myself that isn't so madly expensive as any Rio hotel. Besides I didn't mind in doing cleaning or cooking by myself (especially if I could save some bucks by doing so).
Strongly recommend checking out the classified ads of newspapers and other popular Brazilians sites, espcially those marked as "aluguel de temporada" or "apartamento por temporada" (seasonal renting for no more than 90 days).
You will find several options according to location, price and number of people staying in it. However, you may need a bit of Portuguese or Spanish skills to read them, landlords not necessarily are bilinguals :(
That's how I found my cozy, little apartment in Rua Rainha Elizabeth, two blocks from Copacabana beach and three blocks from Ipanema, at US$400 (+ US$50 deposit returnable at the end of the stay) for one month. Good deal, isn't it?
The most useful classified sections that I found were:
- Jornal do Brasil
http://www.keero.com.br/site/categ.php?c=11
(go to "apartamentos aluguel" or renting apartments)
- O Globo Online
http://www.oglobo.com.br
- Yahoo Imoveis
http://yahoo.imovelweb.com.br
(go to the "pesquisar imovel" section (to search the apartment). Then, in the three columns, pick in the first column as regiao (region) RJ-Zona Sul, if you want to be in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, BArra, Niteroi, Botafogo or surroundings). Then, in the second column, instead of "lançamentos" pick "temporada" (season renting), and finally pick "apartamentos" (apartments).

Copacabana Holiday Ltda: Cheap Apartments in Copacabana/Ipanema
This site offers you several types of apartments for season renting mostly in Copacabana but they have some others in Ipanema, at very good prices. They were trying to rent me an studio half a block away from Copacabana beach, Djalma Ulrich street, for 1100 reais a month(around US$400), and other studios in Ipanema for 1500 reais (around US$550). All of these prices are in low season.
They were also really helpful with any additional requirement (e.g, none of them have telephone, but they can provide you a cell phone). If I had not taken the one in Rainha Elizabeth, I would have taken one of the several offered by them.

Rio Backpackers: Rio's Best Hostel !
Well... I can warmly recommand you this place since I have been staying there for almost 6 months !!! I was what you should call a "permanent guest" !

This hostel is unique in Rio. A big house located in a calm street, very safe area and near the most famous beach ever... Copacabana.

You'll have the choice between bunk beds or individual rooms for couple. Very clean and brand new (the place opened in 2003), with a great interior design (one of the owner is an architect).

On the top floor , there is a leisure area with snooker and TV, where backpackers from all over the world meet and make plans for the night.

Adriana and Tina , the two young owners, will give you all the tips you need about Rio's life. .

A unique atmosphere, you don't really feel like staying at a hostel, but more like sharing a big vacation house with friends.
MARAVILHOSO !!!
**************************************************
NEWS : In 2005 the girls opened a second hostel in Ipanema this time. Prior to our first trip I had no idea about any accommodation options, but after some extensive on-line research we decided to take the plunge on a rented apartment instead of a hotel. Granted with a hotel there is a certain added perceived security (as in you know what you're going to get), but there are many apartment rental options in Rio that will meet everyone's expectations. Plus it's your own place, you can stock up in the supermarket, relax in your own living room and feel more like you actually live there.
Often the per night pricing of a hotel vs an apartment may not be too different. There were three of us sharing a 3 bedroom apartment on the beach in Ipanema, with A/C, large kitchen, laundry area, living room, 24hr security, cell phone, 2 bathrooms and parking, if you choose to rent a car for approx $65 / night per head, during late March. There are less expensive places available, but this was one of the better ones and really was what helped to make our trip what it was.

Hotel Monte Blanco: Moderate Hotel in Catete district
There is another moderate option for traveller's to accomodate in Rio, in Catete area. It's a building in Flamengo residential area in which you can rent a studio for a day ( 70 reais ) or for the month (950 reais + electricity, telephone and gas consommation ). In US$ it will cost you about 300 US$ for the whole month.
It's perfect for people who want to stay in Rio for a month to work or study, because is near the center and metro station Flamengo.
It's cheaper than staying in a hotel if you want to stay for a whole month in Rio. It's in a good area where you have restaurants and it's easy to get around.
