    Packing for Reunion

by mikelisaanna Written Nov 24, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luggage and bags: Rental cars on Reunion are not large, so avoid bringing tons of luggage. We had one suitcase and a small carry-on per person.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you plan to go to the beach, bring water shoes, because Reunion's beaches have a lot of coral on them, and it can cut your feet if you step on it.

Also bring comfortable hiking shoes or boots. The hiking on Reunion is some of the world's best, and you will want to do at least a little bit while you are there.

Reunion is fairly informal, so you won't need to bring fancy clothes. Decent pants and a shirt were fine for all of the restaurants that we went to.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring plenty of sunscreen. You will need it, especially if you are going to the beach or exploring some of the higher altitude sights, such as the volcano or the ridgelines, which are above the clouds and get strong sun.

Photo Equipment: A good camera is a must for Reunion, which has some of the world's greatest scenery. We brought both a large camera with a big zoom lens for scenery shots and a small pcket camera, for when we needed to take pictures on the fly.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring your swimsuits for the beach.

Also, if you plan to explore the higher elevations (volcano, cirques, le Maido, etc.), bring a warm coat, a hat, and gloves. At 6000 feet, it is far colder than it is at sea level. On the day that we went to le Maido, it was just above freezing and windy at the top. We were very glad that we were able to bundle up and stay warm.

Miscellaneous: Bring a good pocket French dictionary. Many people on Reunion do not speak any other languages besides French and the local creole. We found ourselves constantly looking up words that we saw on signs and in brochures.

    For you English only speakers...

Miscellaneous: For you English only speakers some sort of phrasebook will be incredibly useful since French dominates almost everything on this island and you will be lost without a few basic words.
