Mogadishu Things to Do

  • The Shanghai / Old City Area

by hankcheng Written Mar 3, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Shanghai located along the shore South of the city. The Shanghai was once the “Beach Club” where Italian expatriate and the wealthies hung out. The setup of the Shanghai and its building reflected it was once a very beautiful spot of Mogadishu. Some of the best hotel in Mogadishu was in the Shanghai area.

Today, the Shanghai is completely destroyed. The area is controlled by the warlords and its virtually lifeless. It was consider as an off limit area where I was advised not to step out of the technical (truck). Photography was limited only inside the technical.

Listening to my guide's description, I can imagine the beauty and glory the Shanghai once owned. In my opinion, it is still the most beautiful spot in town.

The Bakara Market is the biggest and busiest market in Mogadishu. Items range from the regular living necessity such as clothing and food, to stolen foreign passports, AK47 automatic weapons, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) and ammunition, can be found inside the Bakara.

Mogadishu Transportation

  • Technicals

by hankcheng Written Mar 3, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When you arrange your personal armed guards, you will be traveling with them in one of the pickup trucks, or, the 'Technicals'.

There are privately own, modified pickup trucks that serve as the city's public transportation, but you won't need to travel in any public transportation since you will have your technicals where ever you go.

    Get Hired Guards

by buulayaasha Written Oct 17, 2012

Mogadishu is unsafe and it is a a battle zone for the insurgents and the so called government, there is no effective police so don't expect police protection. hire group of guards to protect you or if you can not afford it stay the highly fortified places . AMISOM and the Somali soldiers have heavy presence in some parts of the city.

  • We Survived Mogadishu for Three Days and...

This is clearly not a place to visit at current times. We (two of us) planned months and studied the city and people and gangs operating there, until we understood. We got in and out, taking hundreds of pictures, capturing several crimes on video. We also captured video and photos of friendly but terrified people who are trapped in that environment, not able to escape. We gave money to several women with children, helping them to carefully hide it. We were two white American women, in disguise, who got through and fooled every one. But it took a lot of research and planning. Anyway, don't visit Mogadishu right now. It's truly a fierce place that has lost its soul. It was a frightening and very sad place. I would have loved to have seen it many years ago when it was beautiful.

Be aware that there are only 2-3 hotel in the city where all the journalist stay. There were incidents where visitors were kidnapped while asleep in their hotel room.

Be very careful when selecting your hotel. Ask someone who has been there recently for hotel recommendation.
