Brunei Warnings and Dangers

  • Watch right first

Traffic . Be aware, driving here is on the left side of the road and local drivers are not supposed to know you first look at left when you walk across a street! Be aware!% June 13th 2015: I learn today (!!!! yes, I missed that since I am on VT !!!!) that short (less than 200 characters) tips do not appear on travel guides; So this error is...

  • Where do I buy cigarettes?

I knew that it would be difficult to purchase an alcoholic drink in Brunei and then found out there is almost nowhere in central Bandar Seri Begawan to buy tobacco. I was ignorant of this and asked for cigarettes at a small shop - the owner just gave me a bemused look. Fortunately, the following day my watertaxi driver took me to a small restaurant...

  • No littering!

I thought Singapore was a very clean city. In comparison Bandar Seri Begawan is spotless. And no wonder - littering is an offence, a big offence! There is a $1000 fine for first conviction. Then a $3000 fine and up to 3 months jail for any second and subsequent offence. That's some message!

  • (don't) Hitch a Ride

If you do not have any car in Brunei, probably you'll use the public transportation. Beware that sometimes there are guys who would try to pick you up at the bus station. Don't!

  • No Alcohol

Alcohol is a no no here. As a foreigner you can import a small amount but it must be consumed in your hotel room . There are stiff fines and even jail time for those who disobey.

  • No smoking in the public area

No smoking in the public area such as in the bus station, restaurant and any other places which state no smoking. If you dare, you lose you precious money. Nowaday 75 peoples had be fined BND$150. Becarefull. You have been warned.

you know it is durians season when the pavements and bus stopnext to tamu kianggehare full of durians...the durians' smell is stronger than the river', watch your step......and grab a few bundles of durians for dinner!

  • Pork & Liquor probihited!

FYI, any type of liquor and food that contains or is from pork is not allowed. It is a Muslim country so that is expected anyway. With that said, you can conclude that there is no nightlife and that you'll be forced to like other meat products like beef & chicken or sea foods during your stay! he he he he.... According to some Filipino residents,...

  • See No Taxi

Dont expect to get taxi easily here except for at the airport or hotel. If you are going somewhere with a taxi please remember to figure out how u will get back. Stopping a taxi along the road pretty much wont happen. So u either get taxi number, arrange hotel shuttle service, rent your own car or get the bus route ready before hand.

  • One hundred dollar notes

are changed today 20 january 2008 at the rate of 1.41 brunei ringitt to one, but they would accept only one hundred dollar notes issued AFTER 2000. this is a new twist, in other countries like Burma, they look for tears and marks and in Cuba they look to see if they are crisp but here for the first time I heard this. in any case, always carry a...

  • Road maps and touristic information maps

There are no real road maps in Brunei, and the tourist map are totally inaccurate; I met people who did not find what they were looking for and went short of petrol…..The map of the ministry of tourism, for instance locates the Waisai Wong Kadir waterfalls north of Labi, they are in fact 8km south of Labi ; I could check that, but there are...

  • Don't be tempted to ride the 3 Sisters

The 3 Sisters is infamous for being silent killers, especially when they awaken. So, don't be tempted to ride or go up the nodding donkeys when they are asleepThey may just awaken without warning and catch riders in their armsYou see, they operate on timers!

  • Because this is a Muslim...

Because this is a Muslim country, one must be careful or what they do or say. Along with alcohol, you will not find pork (yes, the other white meat) anywhere in the menu in Brunei. Yes, everything is pretty strict around here.

  • Not much of a 'DANGER' post,...

Not much of a 'DANGER' post, but there is NO ALCOHOL in Brunei. In 1990, a law prohibiting the sale of alcohol was passed. So, if you wanna party, I suggest you take a trip to Miri (see picture; Sarawak, East Malaysia) from Kuala Belait. It takes approximately 2 hours to drive down or you can bus down. Will add more info on Miri soon. :)

Plenty of currupt police. Our house got brokrn into, and some fingerprints were left on the windowsill in the dust. We pointed this out to the police and they did not know what to do with them. It probably was an inside job as we were on a british ex - pat camp and they keep a list of people who are on holiday. Our next door neighbours who happened...

  • Don't you dare say anything...

Don't you dare say anything contrary about the King, Sultan, whatever, just don't do it. Other than the usual common sense considerations, this is a very nice and seemingly prosperous country. No beggars that you sometimes see elsewhere, not here. And do stay out of this house
