  • A big park and mountain!

    Lanzhou Things to Do

The entrance is free, there's an area for walking around and spending money at the bottom then there are multiple ways to go up the mountain, some good views (usually of smog haha unfortunately) Takes about an hour to get up to the top if you are moving at a fairly quick pace.

  • Bingling Si

    Lanzhou Off The Beaten Path

The Bingling Si Grottoes can be visited in summer. I am told that access is only by water, and that the water in the Yellow River is too low most of the year. I visited the second week of August. Skies were clear and the air was mild. No humidity. This is an extraordinary trip. I was expecting this to be a highlight of my trip to China, but I was...

    Zhangye Restaurants

Right around the Drum Tower is a snack area, down a ramp into a giant tin roofed room filled with tables and ringed with food stalls. While I'm sure many restaraunts in town serve the local speciality it was so brilliant in this bizarre structure I just had to give them a plug. I never knew the name of the dish, just had someone describe it to me....

    Zhangye Off The Beaten Path

I'm sure that describing Zhangye's main attraction as 'Off the Beaten Track' seems a bit inapprorpiate, but this tip is to get their early in the morning, when it opens at 7.30am (although you can slip in a little earlier).Take your flask of tea or a coffee and just find somewhere quiet to sit and contemplate life. In the summer, the air is full of...

Nirvana restaurant is by far the best and most beautiful restaurant in Xiahe. They serve Tibetan, Chinese and Western food, all of excellent quality. I did a tour with Nomad Travel, a tour company based in Xiahe, to go to the grasslands. it was absolutely amazing!! The people were really friendly and we were given yak milk tea...

    Tianshui Things to Do

No schedule that I ever figured out, but occasionally held in one of the artists' quarters on Democracy Road. Standing in front of the party building, head east, cross the side road, the entrance is the first on your left - an alley lined with art supply vendors opens into a building complex that houses a rather lot of artists, and also the small...

    Tianshui General

Tianshui City was built up along a river and is thus a long, fairly narrow town split into two distinct city areas - Tianshui and Beidao (though they recently renamed Beidao Maiji, everyone still calls it the former)Beidao houses the train station, and the busses to Maijishan leave from this side of town. Tianshui houses the main long distance bus...

  • Beware of the desert

    Nanhu Warnings and Dangers

The desert looks beningn enough - flat and featureless - with little to prevent a short walk to get away from civilization for a while. However, I would urge caution. What looks flat from a distance can hide a lot of dips and depressions that can leave you suddenly out of sight of where you came from. Rises and dips can also quickly hide your...

    Nanhu Things to Do

The old abandoned fortress of Shouchangcheng lies half-buried by sand on the eastern edge of Nanhu, just beyond the trees. Quite why it became abandoned is a mystery as the Nanhu oasis has always been a fertile and well-protected place, with plentiful water.Curiously, many local people are competely unaware of its existence and the Yangguan Visitor...

    Bing Ling Si

by Ingalotta Updated Nov 1, 2004

There's just one reason to go to Liujiaxia and that's to see the grottoes of Bin Ling Si. To get there you have to take a boat along the Yellow River. You only can go there three months a year, otherwise, the river is either too low or too high to reach the place. Bing Ling SI is famous for it's caves. If you have seen other caves of this kind before (you can't compare them with the Magao Grottoes in Dunhuang), the caves are perhaps a bit dissapointing, but the landscape around is just great. So if you aren't a expert of grottoe, it should be enough to pay the 30 Yuan for the grottoes on the ground floor. If you want to see more of the grottoes, you have to pay more, up to 300 Yuan.

I can definitly recommend a trip to Bing Ling Si. Consider taking a speed boat instead of the usual one, as even the speed boat takes about one hour to get there.

    Matisi Things to Do

The Thousand Buddha Caves are just inside the entrance gateway to the Matisi Scenic Area, and walking up the road is a pleasant experience, with the river rushing past on one side, and the decaying niches studding the cliffface on the other. There are 8 caves here, of a similar age and style as at Matisi Bei up the valley. • Getting to and from Matisi

    Matisi Transportation

There are occasional buses from Zhangye to villages near Matisi, but it is probably easiest to hire a taxi for the entire day (RMB150) if you are returning to Zhangye. If you are staying overnight, arrange for a driver to come back. Hitchhiking is not recommended as the traffic is light. However, there seem to be a good number of visitors by car to...
