    WANDER AROUND THE VILLAGE

by davidjo Updated Feb 6, 2016

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

While you are in Malana have a wander around the village and see the marvelous houses that the locals have constructed. They have all been made from wood, hence there are not too many forested areas remaining.

I don't know how strict it is now but when i was there you could not touch a villager or enter a shop. If you wanted to buy something you had to throw the money in and they would throw your purchase to you. If you broke the rules you had to pay for a sheep/goat, sacrifice it and smere blood over the areas or person that you had touched

by davidjo Updated Feb 6, 2016

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Enjoy an easy trek from Jari to Malana where you will meet villagers on the way and see wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. The trek will take around 4 hours and the track is easy to follow.

    NOTE
Do not carry drugs back down the mountain as sometimes police stop and search you, and even plant something in your bag so they can extract money from you.

    NOTE
Since i made the trek i believe that a road which will take you half way there.

GET STONED IN THE RUBBING SEASON

by davidjo Updated Jul 21, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Surrounding Malana are Marijuana plantations and many foreigners go up there for the rubbing season, late Sept, Oct. They would rub the marijuana plants to get the extract then smoke it. I am not a drug user and i found it difficult to get on with my fellow travelers because as soon as they got up, the pipe would come out and they would be stoned until they fell asleep. If you are not into drugs i suggest you don't go as you will be completely out of it.

    big plants!

When you enter the village be careful not to touch the people or their houses as you will be fined 1,000 rups, which will be used to sacrifice a sheep and wipe the place where you touched with the blood.

    NOTE
Nowadays it may cost you a lot more as this review was from quite a few years ago

    CAREFUL OF THE DRUG SCENE

by davidjo Written Jul 21, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In Kullu Valley, Parvati Valley and Malana area in particular more than 20 foreigners have disappeared since 1990. This is a drug area and there are m,any nasty people around who are involved in this business. Do not wander off the main trails and even better, take a guide who knows the area. It has also been known for police to plant drugs on you while riding a bus, then demand a huge sum to keep you out of trouble. I have marked the area on the map where one has to be extra vigilant.
