Leopold Tips (13)

Leopold Cafe!: Place that gives Goosebumps!

Life is normal in Leopold Cafe now.

November 26, 2008, three of the ten Pakistani terrorists who had sneaked into the city via sea route opened fire with AK47s at Leopold Cafe, claiming 10 lives and the bullet holes are still present and it was near my head in the window in the upstairs area. "Good Lord!
There is a big hole in the ceiling too.

Leopold Cafe was established in 1871 and remains popular with backpackers. There's a dimly light upstairs area. The menu is diverse including Indian, Chinese, and Continental, and the servings are large. They got a good selection of wine as well.

Opening Hours are Early morning until midnight. Smoking is prohibited.

Leopold's Cafe: The famous Leopold's !

Great, buzzing atmosphere.

Packed with lots of tourists, as well as many locals.

Serving a very diverse range of munchies. I could even get cornflakes there.

Service is great, with a smile. Energetic, efficient young men.

The place carries scars from the November 2008 terrorist attacks, when 2 gunmen had started firing around killing over 10 patrons and staff :-(

Favorite Dish Funky, chunky, Club sandwich.

Leopold Cafe: Huge variety and good atmosphere.

Leopold is a very busy but comfortable restaurant. The menu is huge but of all the things i tried i liked all and loved some. It is clean and although the cost may be a little above average it is still very resonable. The main cousre portions are large so don't order too much. Attached are some photos of the food and bill for what we ordered so you can get an exact idea of the prices.

Favorite Dish I know it's India but the do some lovely Chinese food.

Leopold Café and Bar (Leopold's): Leo's Pride!

Leopold's is one place which can never get out of my mind! Whenever I decide I wanna celebrate any occasion, Leopold's is the first thing that comes to my mind! 'Leopold's' has this very magnetic feel to it, which makes you wanna go there again and again. The food, of course, is undoubtedly delicious and delectable, with a wide range of indian, chinese, and continental cuisine. If you're a hard-core boozer, I bet you're gonna get addicted to their famous beer tower. Hic! Somehow, the moment I enter this 'heritage food house', especially with my firang guests, I feel like a celebrity! Wow!

Favorite Dish Beef Chilly Dry and Tandoori Pomfret are supremely scrumptious! The Prawn Curry Rice is also one of my favorites, but just be sure that the sea food is fresh. However, the staff is considerate enough to request you to order another dish, in fact, even suggest another dish assuring that it would be as fresh as it could be. But when its way too crowded, you're intuitive mind would be the best way to decide. Their 'Chicken Tikka Masala' and 'Chicken Tandoori' have always been as mouth watering as ever whenever I've been here. But the most important of all, you don't wanna miss out the famous 'Beer Tower' of Draught Beer. You've gotta order for Draught Beer Pitcher and you get your personal, cylindrical, 'Beer Tower' right in front of you, in no time. Well, its personal only as long as you're in Leopold's. For self assurance, you can just ask for the 'Beer Tower' although its not mentioned in the same fashion in the drinks menu. There's more coming soon!

Leopold: café since 1871

The exterior does not give much away but within you will find grand pillars, wobbling ceiling fans, decor of days gone and the bullet holes of more modern times (from the terror attacks of 2008). Nope you have not stepped into Bugsy Malones but Mumbai's infamous Leopold's!

A Mecca for those who have read Shantaram (Gregory David Richard) and a hub for everybody else.

The food menu is extensive and I thought expensive (with a large collection of more western dishes) and none too impressive (but then I was comparing with the more local places in which I had satisfied my stomach). The beer towers are a hit! cannot really go to Mumbai and not venture through the door!

T.shirts and mugs are branded with LEOPOLD and for sale should you so wish for such a souvenir.

For me, my little sojourn into Leopold's proved to be my Mumbai highlight because I happened to stumble into Gregory David Richard's himself otherwise I would have simply left with my Leopold's curiosity sated and a 'must visit' place ticked from my list.

LEOPOLD: Touristy

If you prefer to spend time with fellow travellers, I suppose this is the best place for you.
I had lunch here on occasion and the service and food is ok. It is quite an institution, so do visit at least once.
Not my favourite place to go/eat in Mumbai.

Leopolds Cafe: Hot-spot for meeting fellow travellers.

Long before Gregory David Roberts wrote his magnum opus called "Shantaram", Leopolds was a famous Mumbai institution. He still holds court here.
Not only is the restuarant downstairs a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a cool bar area upstairs, with comfortable seats, low lighting and icy air-con. The bar area in particular is popular with the local crowd. We spent New Years Eve here in 2006, and it was packed with partying revellers, foreign and local. It was a fun evening.
Downstairs area has checked tablecloths, round tables and comfortable chairs. The service is sometimes a bit erratic, depending on time of day. Breakfast & lunchtime is very busy. Leopolds is also a great pit-stop after a hectic bout of sight-seeing. The fruit juices are fresh and icy cold. Being a great meeting place for travellers, Leopolds has many souveniers on offer-Tee shirts, caps & nick-nacks, all displaying the Leopolds Logo.
The food is standard fare- we ate many breakfasts here, and lunches too.
The menu is somewhat eclectic- think fried eggs & tomoto with baked beans done Indian Style.
The food is, however, tasty and fresh., and the toast for breakfast is ALWAYS perfect.
Menus are under glass on each table.

Favorite Dish I love the breakfasts. eggs done any way- fresh toast with "RED" jam

Leopold Cafe: Consistent

Even before I knew where Mumbai was, I knew where Leo's was, and what it was all about. It has always been a place for 'foreigners' or 'firangs'. I have had the good fortune to witness a few brawls as well. And the waiters are always non-committal. This place has its own charm, and they should not have renovated the first floor.

Leo's, which is what everybody calls it, is a place where you can go on your first date, or your tenth date, with your parents, with business associates, and definitely with friends. And you will always meet someone you know.

Favorite Dish The onion steak here has remained the same for the past 15 years that I have eaten it. This is the one item on the menu that I always ask for. Sometimes, I eat the prawn curry with rice. I love the fresh lime water (sweet) and the glass that it comes in. A great alternative to the beer.

Leopolds: Please, don't miss Leopolds

The friendliest place I stopped in Mumbai, no hassle, got what I wanted. There is a real buzz in the place with locals and backpackers mixing. Normally there is a trade off, you know, nice place rotten food well that just isn't true of Leopolds. Real place to come and recharge your batteries.

Friendly staff always willing to take a phot of their customers. Really friendly a must for the lone traveller.

Favorite Dish Rogan Josh and keema nan washed down with diet coke although they do beer if that's your fancy.

LEOPOLD: Leopold Cafe & Bar

Leopold's, located at the northern end of Colaba Causeway Rd, is a very popular place and when I visited it was packed with loads of people eating and drinking beer out of large pitchers. It was established in 1871 and has been a popular meeting place ever since.

Open: 7.30am-11pm.

LEOPOLD: Best Reshmi Kebab in India

Leopolds is lively with a great atmosphere. A mix of people frequent here, travellers, regular locals and Gregory David Roberts author of Shantaram. There is an extensive food menu. Staff are friendly.

Favorite Dish Reshmi Kebab. Delicately spiced with a great taste. Having tried Reshmi kebab through out various parts of India, Leopolds is the best.

LEOPOLD: Bumping Place

Most travellers cant go to this city without hearing about this place and it has been a popular spot since the late 1800s and when I visited on a weekday night it was no different. I couldnt get over the amount of people that were filled into this place willing to pay over $4 US for small drink and it seemed like every young backpacker on a gap year was there making the vibe kinda of disappointing. I was expecting the place to filled with more locals but the place is a great meeting place for travellers.

Favorite Dish There is a big Chinese, continental and India menu but the food was overpriced and I probably wouldnt visit again. It is a good place for one night but other than that it will break your budget.
