Wankhede Stadium is a cricket stadium that was established in 1975. Nobody knew that a dispute between the Cricket Club of India (CCI) and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) would result into the largest cricket stadium in Mumbai.
Wankhede Stadium has ousted Brabourne Stadium in all respects. It has become the main cricket venue in the city and always stands in competition to host an international match in India. With a seating capacity of 45,000 spectators, the coliseum tenders a spectacular sight of cricket. The sports ground has been testimony to the great innings, for instance Gavaskar's 205 and Kallicharan's 187 in the 1978-79 series
Being close to the sea, the ground proffers spin and bounce to the spinners and swing to fast bowlers. In 1995, Wankhede Stadium was upgraded with lights, to host day and night matches. Subsequently, it made the venue for an India-Australia match in the 1996 Cricket World Cup. The coliseum has been assigned to host the finals of 2011 Cricket World Cup; due to this it would undertake a major renovation.

As I was walking along Marine Drive, I stumbled across this cricket game being played in one of the Gymkhanas that are located here. I spent quite some time here watching this game and saw some good shots played as well as some wickets taken. The word Gymkhana is derived from the Urdu and Hindi word for "racket court" and is originally referred to a place where sporting events take place as well as meeting places where contests were held to test the skill of competitors.
The main cricket stadium, the Wankhede Stadium, is located near the Oval Maidan and you can watch the wannabies play here as they try and aspire to their national cricket team heroes . I watched a game for quite some time as it was entertaining but there's no seats here for you to sit on! You can also take in a game along Marine Drive at one of the Gymkhanas.
There are playing fields at Mumbai University where kites are flown and cricket is played. As an American, I find cricket to be an odd sport distantly related to baseball, except that the pitch bounces and there appear to be two home plates. I do know that the Indians are crazy about this sport which also resembles American baseball in that games are long enough to require food and drink for both players and spectators. At Mumbai University students play cricket with the colonial style university buildings looming in the background.
