Sacred Heart Church Tips (4)

Gothic with some intersting windows

This is a (very) late Gothic church built close to Pondicherry's railway station. It is quite huge, but not particularly special architecturally. The stained glass windows in the south wall of the nave (right side as you enter) gave me some cause to be excited. If you examine them carefully you will notice that they were made in 1908 by OTT of 'Strassburg' (see picture below). STRASSBURG was the German name for the French 'Strasbourg'. In 1909, Alsace-Lorraine, where Strasbourg is located, was under German occupation. It had been since 1871.

If you are near the station, take a look.

Sacred Heart Church

Consecrated at the turn of the 20th century, this beautiful brown and white church is noted for its splendid Gothic architecture. The most beautiful part of the church is the stained glass windows which depict various saints and events from the life of Jesus Christ.

At the entrance to the church grounds is a small shop where you may purchase a candle (among other religious items). From outside facing the church, go to the right side of the church where you may light your candle and say a prayer.

We visited the church on New Year's Day when the church was overflowing with worshippers. The service, especially the singing, was really nice.

This church is within rickshaw distance of Beach Road and is the nicest church in Pondicherry. Definitely worth a visit!

Sacred Heart Church

This very distinctive brown and white painted church is located near the train station in the south of the city centre. It was built in the 18th century and its most interesting features are its large stained-glass windows depicting incidents from Christ’s life.
