Kawaguchi-ko Things to Do

  • Ropeway up the hill

If you are in Kawaguchi-ko, it's worthwhile taking a trip up the hill on the ropeway. One one side, there's a good view of the lake, and on the other, a great view of Mt. Fuji.

  • Yurari Hot Spring w/Mt.Fuji view

Yurari close to Kawaguchiko town is a great Onsen to visit. You can enjoy the mineral baths with the Mt. Fuji right across your eyes. After you finish your bath I recomand to take massage. It is only 60.000 Y for 60 min and it is really great.

  • Tenjou-san

A popular place for viewing Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi below. It can be very crowded but the view is spectacular. There is a cable car from the lakeside or you can walk to the summit. I'm far too lazy but I saw plenty of senior citizens who walked up so it couldn't be that difficult.

Houdou is made of flour like Udon but the shape is diferrent from Udon. It does look similar like Thai food calls 'Lakna' or Chinese food calls 'Horfun'. This is the most popular food in this small little town.

Kawaguchi-ko Transportation

  • Fuji by train - an extra fare on last...

I had a spare day to do some train research so (similar to my trip to Hakone) jumped on a train to Mt Fuji.Rather than heading out from Tokyo, I was coming from Yokohama so took the Yokohama line to Hachioji to transfer onto the Narita Express - this was the most convenient train for the time I was travelling. Plus, with a rail pass I could jump on...

  • Getting to Kawaguchi-ko

There is one direct train a day from Shinjuku, but otherwise it's possible to change to the Fuji Kyuko line at Otsuki, a station on the Chuo line west from Tokyo. The direct train from Shinjuku leaves in the morning, and returns in the late afternoon.

  • Green Bus

This bus run around Kawaguchi lake. You could get the 2 days 1000yen ticket, unlimited travel on this bus. But I think it will be cheaper to get the normal buses (not sure how much it cost but it could be cheaper). You can inquire for information at the Bus Station Information Centre. English is spoken here.

Kawaguchi-ko Off The Beaten Path

  • Muse Museum (Dolls)

When my wife told me she wanted to visit a doll museum I wasn't particularly excited, especially when she told me would walk there. It's practically on the opposite shore of the lake from the station and I got less excited the more lost and tired I became. It took about an hour to get there. Once inside though I was glad we made the effort. The...

  • Mitsu-Toge-Yama

About 5 stops on the train line out of Kawaguchi-ko is the Mitsutoge stop. From here, if you follow signs to the "Green Centre" you will pass an impressive waterfall before arriving at the start of the Mitsu-Toge-Yama trail. The trail itself is relatively demanding due to the rugged terrain, and is very steep at times, but not very difficult to...

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.
