Sanjusangen-do Temple: A Marvel of Buddhist Art
Situated in Kyoto, Sanjusangen-do Temple is home to 1001 life-sized wooden statues of Kannon, offering a glimpse into Buddhist devotion and artistry.
Originally built as Rengeoin Temple in 1164, it was commissioned by retired Emperor Go-shirakawa. After being destroyed in 1249, the temple was reconstructed in 1266. The temple's long hall features 33 bays between its pillars and houses the renowned 1000-armed Senjū-Kannon, sculpted by Tankei in 1254, along with 500 additional Kannon statues.
