Good guides

Favorite thing The two magazines pictured opposite are two of the most popular free papers in Japan. Both magazines are particularly useful for getting up to date listings of cinema, stage and live music awards.

Japanzine is handy for people travelling throughout the country as it covers the whole of Japan and features Carisma Man, but none of us have a clue what it's implying. Um.

Kansai Scene has very useful street maps of the most popular areas in Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto showing all the featured bars and restaurants. The maps also indicate where you can pick up the Kansai Scene. Obviously this is largely useless, as by this point the magazine is sitting in your hands.

The magazines can be picked up in many bars, cafes and bookstores throughout the city (HMV, Virgin and Tower Records are usually a good bet).

Another useful travel guide is the street map provided by the tourist information offices.
