Binondo Church: A Historic Spiritual Hub
Located in the vibrant District of Binondo, Manila, this church offers a deep sense of heritage and faith. Founded in 1596 by Dominican priests, Binondo Church was established to cater to Chinese converts to Christianity.
The church has a turbulent history, with its original structure destroyed during the British bombardment in 1762. A granite church replaced it in 1852, but again suffered significant damage during World War II; the octagonal belfry was one of the few structures that survived. Its cultural value is highlighted by being the national shrine of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint, canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1987.
