Aquarium Tips (7)

Aquarium

The Phuket Aquarium is a newer attraction.
It is located on a land arm in the south east of Phuket Town. Follow the road until you come to the farthest end.

The Aquarium is well done, and offers several tanks with fresh water and salt water fish.
They also have a tunnel where you can walk through a big tank, filled with sharks and mantas - something I have until now only seen in very big Aquariums.
This Aquarium is actually more on the smaller side, but made with much view on the details, definitely worth a visit.

In the entrance hall you also find a "Touch Pool". Much fun for the younger - and those who stayed young in the heart, because in here you can find sea life to touch. Unpoisonous of course. I would not dare touch anything when diving and snorkeling, because you never know. Well, here you do, so go ahead and take that sea star in the hand...

Also interesting is the exhibition about endangered sea turtels. They hatch them from eggs and let them free when ready.

The Aquarium at Cape Panwa

The Aquarium at Cape Panwa is quite a good aquarium - well stocked, well set-out and plenty of information. It is attached to the Phuket Marine Biological Center, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. It was recently reopened after 2.5 years of renovations.

There are many varieties of fish on display, which are found in the Andaman Sea and in local freshwater. You will also find some exotic species. There is some very good information about the creatures which is unusual in an Asian animal centre.

It takes about an hour to have a good look around the aquarium and kids will find it very entertaining. If your children are quite young, it may take longer to get through. There is also a touch-pool filled with shallow water creatures such as Sea Cucumbers.

The Phuket Aquarium is open daily from 8.30am - 4.00pm.
Children under 108cm height get in for free, other children 50baht and the entry fee for adults is 100 baht.

There is also a small gift shop and snacks available at the Aquarium.

My suggestion would be to visit the Aquarium early afternoon, then visit the nearby Rawai fishing village and follow on by heading to Prom Thep Cape for sunset, but get there a bit early (about 4.30-5.00pm) because of the cheap shopping, food, the elephant shrine and the lighthouse.

Phuket Aquarium

Phuket's main aquarium has undergone extensive renovations over the years and one of the highlights of the aquarium is a 10 meter long underwater glass tunnel.

The Aquarium is quite small and would only take you about an hour to go through, but it is good value for money as the entry fee is quite cheap.

The aquarium is very well laid out and all information is in Thai and English.

If you are interested in diving, a trip to the aquarium will provide a good introductory course to the marine life found in the waters around Phuket. As Thailand's major marine biological research station, the centre conducts research on tropical reef ecosystems, commercial fisheries and other projects.

The aquarium also hatches and breeds species of endangered sea turtles in order to release them back into the sea.

Phuket Aquarium is definitely worth a visit and it is located near the southern tip of the island at Ao Makham on Cape Panwa. There is a small shop for drinks and ice creams plus a souvenir shop.

A taxi or tuk-tuk from Patong will take about 1 hour. Expect to pay at least 1,000 baht to get there and back. The aquarium is open daily from 08.00 - 16.00 and admission fees are 100 baht for an adult and 50 baht for a child.

The Phuket Aquarium

I would say for it's fee, this aquarium is worth the visit even though it is all the way down south at Panwa Cape.

The A/C wasn't working when we were there but the exhibits are worth the visit. If you have young children who can't swim let alone snorkel, they would have missed out on a lot of the marine life in Phuket. The aquarium visit isn't exactly the real thing but close enough.

I like the Amazonian electric eel exhibit. They have some voltmeter displayed above and the fish constantly let out jolts that were measured.

There are giants in the aquarium as well. Among them is the Giant Grouper. There are three of them.

I would say it is a better visit than the Phuket Zoo.

Phuket Aquarium

We travelled here from Patong on the local bus changing in Phuket town and it was only about £1.00 to go in.

Not fantastic but was something different to do, i think if your a snorkeller/diver you will probobly see more fish in the sea.

The underwater tunnel was probibly the best bit.

The only downside was that the bus didnt return for us so we ended up getting a taxi back into Phuket town, but not before having a nice cold beer in a little bar overlooking the sea.
