    Chinese Junks (Boats)

by guell Updated Dec 15, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The only way to really experience Halong Bay is to book one or two nights on board a Junk. Annie at Handspan Travel's Hanoi office took care of all of our arrangements.

We cruised around for three days, slept on the boat the first night and at a very nice camp ground on the second night. The staff was very friendly, and the food was great!

Join a Tour and Ride in a minivan From Hanoi

Our trip to Halong Bay included transportation from Hanoi. We met at the Handspan Office in the old quarter and left the driving to them. The van had AC and was relatively new. This was truly a stress free experience.

Chinese Junks at Halong Bay enhanced the looks of Halong formation.

Packages to Halong Bay from Hanoi are probably the easiest, although you might save a few dollars by arranging your own transport & Chinese Junk fees.

    Chinese Junk

What seems to be the only way to get around Ha Long Bay is a Chinese Junk. Well, unless you rent one of those small fishing boats with motor or one with the paddles from the local..hmmm

There are about 5-6 bedrooms and a bathroom within each one. Its pretty comfortable.

The small junks that ply the waters of Halong Bay are a nice way to see the bay. They are quick enough, without being fast, so you reach your destination at Cat Ba without missing anything on the way.

We organised our trip with the Kangaroo Cafe as our hotel was around the corner.

In this boat it has desks like a restaurant inside and has a deck with chairs. The kitchen is at the back and also the toilet too.

Renting motorbikes to explore Cat Ba Island, but don't run into anything because any scratches you leave on the bike and they will make you pay for. Trust me from experience...just a little scratch.

The best way to travel around Ha Long Bay is on a huge Chinese junk, complete with red or yellow sails. Don't cheat yourself of the experience and go in a modern cruise ship that we saw.
