Before you spend big money (or any money) on aboriginal artifacts or paintings, know what you want and get a rough idea of prices and then decide what you are willing to pay.
You will often find people in the streets or parks or even communities (if you get to visit one) with artifacts for sale - often at exhorbitant prices.
Unique Suggestions: There are many galleries in Katherine and in these you will see great items, some expensive, some not, but they can give you an idea of what you should pay.

Unfortunately there are still many people, mostly aboriginal, in the area wanting handouts from tourists.
Please do not encourage this by giving out "gifts". There are strict guidelines about drinking alcohol in the streets and public areas and you could be fined for giving alcohol.
Spending quite a bit of time working in these areas I am well aware of the health problems and if we as tourists/travellers do not encourage poor behavior (begging for alcohol and cig's) we are doing some good.
Unique Suggestions: You may get yelled at, or spat at but just keep walking.
If you ever feel in danger or threatened - go into a shop or say that you are calling the police.
Thankfully this behaviour is improving....or reducing ...so good luck , I hope you do not see this side of Aussie life.
Fun Alternatives: Ignore those who are begging you - particularly children. Everyone in Australia is entitled to welfare so they do have money.....unfortunately it is not always spent on the right things. You may feel sorry for the children but we should not be creating a begging culture
