Departure Charge for International Flights
You no longer need to pay a a separate departure charge at Christchurch Airport. NZ$12.50 will be applied to each international arrival and departure as part of the airfare costs.
If you believe you have paid more than NZ$25 for your return trip, or NZ$12.50 each way, then you can request a refund from Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL). Write to:
PO Box 14001
Please enclose: copies of itinerary, boarding pass and relevant documentation which shows the departure charge payment, your original departure charge stickers or receipts, name, phone number and address for correspondence.
CIAL will reimburse you for any overpayments by cheque. Requests must be received no later than 30 days from the time of your return to Christchurch.
Don't forget to keep NZD25.00 for departure airport tax as this is not included in the ticket prices.
Only cash transactions are accepted to put that aside in advance unless you want to be caught out.
International departures, beware: 25 dollars, or you will not be able to enter the departure lounge!! Forgive me for swearing, but this is the least pleasant part of flying out of Christchurch. First, you wait in line for the check-in, then you have to wait in an even longer line to pay your departure tax. It almost seems like some kind of government-sponsored employment scheme so that ANZ Bank can have 4 tellers sitting and counting money from early morning until late night. This is ridiculous! Why can't they include this tax in the ticket price? That would make sense. Anyway, lesson learned: Make it to the airport in good time.
Set aside NZ 25 per person (children travelling with parents of certain age is exempted - but please check) for the airport departure tax. It is payable at the Bank of New Zealand - CASH!!!
