    Electronic Equipment

    by Part_Native Updated Sep 18, 2007

The customs in San Jose is a bit backwards & will assign the term "Computer Equipmrnt" to any item that they think uses electricity. If you are bringing 2 or more computers per person they will try to put a tax on it or make you leave a deposit on it. In some cases, your passport could be stamped with a 6-month restriction on electronic importing.

    Airport Departure Tax

    by Jase1177 Updated Oct 4, 2005

The Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose charges a $26 departure tax to leave Costa Rica. This is totally separate from the taxes included in your airline ticket.

There are two (that I saw) locations in the ticketing area where you queue to pay the tax. You have to pay this tax & receive documentation before you can be issued your boarding pass. You can pay in colones, dollars, credit card (this is treated as a cash advance), or a combination of the cash.

If are able to and remember to pay it when you arrive, this will save some time and another thing you need to remember on the day of departure. This was my plan, but I actually forgot because of all the excitement of arriving.

I only stood in line for less than ten minutes, but can see how easy it is to have a longer wait. My flight was leaving at 7AM, so it was one of the first flights...but the terminal was PACKED full of people!
