Coco Taxi Tips (9)

COCO TAXI

A fun way to get from the Varadero Hoteles District to downtown Varadero is by COCO TAXI. They are the funniest looking little things. They are yellow, egg-shaped, 3-wheeled vehicles and zip around all over the place in Varadero and in Havana. They look slow but actually they go very fast.
Always negotiate a price before you get in. It was about 8 pesos ( $9.00 CDN ) to go from our Hotel to downtown Varadero, which is about 10 km.

Good experience

All around the resorts, you can catch these little trains which cost 1$US/person and are really fun and helpfull to get you to the village. Their schedules are usually at the front desk of your hotel. If you want another way to travel, you can use the local's city bus which is very cheap or the coco cabs. These are orange and driven by women only. They are fast, fun and much cheaper than a cab. You can negociate your price.

Yellow Cocunut Fun

I had seen pics of these cute yellow vehicles in magazines and guide books, and so I was determined to have a ride in one while in Cuba.

Like hollowed out little yellow coconuts, they squat cutely at street corners waiting for passengers. They always look friendly and inviting.

They whizz from place to place, open as they are to the elements. They are small and a little squashed, so don't expect to bring lots of bags or bulky shopping. They won't take any more than two passengers plus driver.

They're a great way to get around and see the sites.

They cost about the same as a normal taxi, but negotiate your price.

Lots and lots of fun - a definite must do in Varadero.

Coco Taxi = MOST EXPENSIVE RIDE!!!!

Coco taxis are the most expensive why of transportation, they look nice but don't be fooled they are expensive a 5min ride cost me $4us rip off,

Horse bogey WATCH OUT THEY TRY AND SCAM YOU!!! They are supposed to charge you per ride not buy person , SO BEWARE DO NOT LET THEM CHARGE YOU PER PERSON, EXAMPLE $5 PER TRIP REGARDLESS IF YOU ARE 2,3,4 PEOPLE, I REPEAT DO NOT LET THEM CHARGE PER PERSON, they even have signs on the bogey with prices , but they think people are stupied and can't read SO THEY WILL TRY AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU!!! BEWARE!!!
Some of these guys that drive the bogey are so F-lazy that if you offer them the exact money to take you somewhere, they rather REFUSE YOU AND CONTINUE TO SLEEP ON THERE CART, GIVING YOU THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU ARE BOTHERING THEM!!!
Taking the taxi was the best route , fast and cheap, 15min ride was $4us.
Another alternative is renting a scooter $25us all day or bikes from the hotel they are free!!!

Coco Taxi

Coco Taxi's are 3 wheeled vehicles, only driven by women and are a great laugh to get around in.
We paid 8 pesos ( about £5 ) from Varadero centre to our hotel which was about 10 Km.

Take a Coco!

Coco-Taxis are hollow, egg-shaped, 3 wheeled motorcycles that are plentiful and easy to find. They rent for $10 hourly, or never more than $5 to travel the length of Avenida Primera.

They are noisy :o)

These small coco taxis are very noisy to sit in and not very cheap but fun to try once. The picture is from Havana but there are a lot of them driving around in Varadero also.
