Morua Mai: Very exquisite cuisine in Sosua

    by Edward72 Written Jul 24, 2015

Morua Mai is to me one of the top five restaurants in Sosua. The cuisine is superb, I specially enjoy the pasta primavera there, also the surf `n turf. Their elegant setting takes place under a giant tiki hut that can be seen when walking towards the beach from Pedro Clisante Street, the main street of El Batey. This is a restaurant that keeps a high level of services and been a tradition for a long time in Sosua. Chef Alexandra Brockmans is very friendly and professional, and Rafael the owner gives clients a personalized and attentive service. Their menu selection is varied, great desserts too.

    Dress Code: Casual is fine.

Address: Pedro Clisante #1, El Batey Sosua

Directions: Right by the entrance to the Artist Promenade in Sosua Beach

  • Club 59 (clasico): Best Night Club

by LosCueros Written Dec 5, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This club was by far the best nightclub in Sosua for dancing and the hottest women. The Music is banging, Latin, dance, hip Hop etc... The night I was there, they had a guess DJ from New York City who was off the hook. The dancefloor was going crazy. Drink prices are reasonable and there is no better place for music women and booze. Defenitely a good time.

Dress Code: Casual, dress how u like but you must check your hat in at the door.

PLAZA MERENGUE AND CLASSIC CLUB 59: CAFETERIA, BAR, RESTAURANT, CLUB, HUSTLING PLACE

by schurlif Written May 24, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place is everything in the title plus dancing, eating and drinking, people watching, maybe adult spot and definitely meat hustling market # 1 in Sosúa..... As I usually sat at Central Bar, some three or four meters away from Merengues entrance, the girls swapped over and it was many times a sheer pleasure to kid around with them if they had some humor and were not that desperate to make a few quick bucks.... but some of them were also real pains in the neck ( see other tip about what money can buy in Sosúa ).
But besides all this Merengue is also a hugely popular spot for just drinking at the bar, socializing or dancing at the upstairs Club 59..... Plaza Merengue and Latino's Bar are the two top hot spots of Sosúa and I was a regular in Central Bar exactly between them and got it in stereo...
Well, cruising or wandering on Calle Pedro Clisante , which you undoubtly will do when in Sosúa, you won't be able to miss it..... and you shouldn't either... Take a break, sit down, look around, order a drink and relax...... somebody will take care of you , you can bet on this......

Dress Code: I don't know if they accept bare breasts, female or male.... otherwise....come as you feel like it....

Directions: on T H E Calle Pedro Clisante, right there......

BATISSA THE MAGICIAN: SOSÚA MAGIC - NO KIDDING

by schurlif Written May 23, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sitting anywhere on Calle Pedro Clisante at night watching the crowds walk by you will undoubtely spot this gentleman with the freaky haircut..... In fact, I was so impressed that I asked him if I could take a couple of pictures of him which he gently okayed. It turned out that he is a magician who cruises the busy Sosúa streets at night in search for someone to hire him for an impromptu magic show, whereever, at the bar, in the restaurant.... He walks around with his little case where he keeps his pidgeons and rabbits, the colorfull silken scarves and playing cards.....
He looked pretty exhausted that evening, nonetheless we started a nice chat and even though I never hired him, we talked to each other every evening from then on and I invited him for a couple of beers...
But if and when in Sosúa, don't miss the Great Magician ( EL MAGO ) BATISSA.... who will perform nicer and cheaper illusions for you than your travel agent and your Sosúa real estate agent....

Dress Code: maybe a loincloth...???? don't know anymore what to write here....

Directions: anywhere on Calle Pedro Clisante and surroundings.....

    the wizard......... the magician........

POTPOURRI OF SOME OF THE OTHERS: MORE PEDRO CLISANTE ENTERTAINMENT

by schurlif Written May 22, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Voilá, more of Calle Pedro Clisante, definitely the most popular and populated street of all of Sosúa.
Five other bars / dancing places to chose from except the last one, the MOBY DICK dancing place that was closed by the police at the height of Sosúas tourist boom some 10 years ago, supposedly because of child prostitution going on inside but other voices whisper that the responsible police chief just delivered a blow to his equally corrupt competitor in the police force, the owner of Moby Dick.... Neither scenario surprises me, probably both are true.....
pic # 1) The X Dancing Club and Disco just opposite the street from Merengue Bar... as good as any other....
pic # 2) The Tropicana Bar , Men's Spa.... quite suspicious ..... is that working out what the girl silhouettes are doing on the sign..??
pic # 3) The more low key Ruby's, at the beginning of the street that leads down to the beach.....
but what do I know..? I'm not a drinker, so sitting in a bar makes not much sense to me anyway.....
pic # 4) Sea Cretis ( dunno what this supposed to mean....), yet another hst (hooker seeks tourist) place... music, drinks, beer and many girls, all of which with the same intent....
Good luck to you, ladies..... with all that competition.....
and pic # 5) the infamous Moby Dick.....The place has been like this since it was shut down..... and this is a prime Pedro Clisante business spot..... The way the building looks from the outside is an affront to the holiday needing tourist eyes.... Wonder how long this ruin will be in the way for another, hopefully better option for Sosúas already pretty boring night life......

Dress Code: Just make sure you cover your private parts, the rest and fashion and etiquette and other "civilized" norms are irrelevant in Sosúa.....

LATINO CLUB: ANOTHER HOOKER MEETS TOURIST BAR

by schurlif Written May 13, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As mentioned in my last tip, the Latino Club Disco is in the back while the street front is graced with another neon lit alcoholic beverages heaven and hooker parking lot...... lol... I'm not moralizing here, it's just that there are really too many places like this and it was boring after a while not to be able to find some real alternative..... In fact, thinking a little more about it, the WHOLE Calle Pedro Clisante is one big "puteiro" and you actually can't walk down this street without being hustled at least twice....

Well, BUT if you like to drink beer, this is certainly a good choice.

Dress Code: There is no dress code in all of Sosúa......

Directions: Calle Pedro Clisante where the most action is........

DISCO LATINO CLUB: SMALL DISCO, GOOD MUSIC

by schurlif Written May 12, 2007

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Latino Club is a Pedro Clisante front bar with lots of movement at night and hordes of meatmarket special offers walking back and forth on the sidewalk in the front or sitting in the bar..... To the right is the entrance to the disco, pretty small but nevertheless "cute"... The DJ puts good dancing music on, the dancing floor is cramped and it's also a good place for people watching....
Entrance is free and the orange juice I ordered was priced decently...
Of course it's not a kindergarten , so you'll find the hookers in there too where they are more direct..... but at least they weren't insistant..... Come 1:00 h AM and the place has to shut down like every restaurant ( save the ones inside the hotels ), bar or other nightlife activity....
It's a real shame, because this decree simply kills a big part of tourist-have-fun, to close down everything at 1:00 AM is simply TOO EARLY.........

LOL... I am one of 10 partners owning the Divva Club in São Paulo (have a look www.divva.com.br which I soon will present in a nightlife tip on my São Paulo page...) Divva opens mainly on Friday and Saturday , sometimes during the week too..... and it opens only at midnight .... !!! At 11:30 PM there's usually a waiting line with 300 people..... LOL..... Imagine if we had to shut down at 1:00 AM !!

Dress Code: no dress code..... but no topless or swimming suit, pleeease !

Directions: Calle Pedro Clisante, right in the middle of the middle of the action..........

Like the Cinderella ball, you gotta go.... home before 1:00 AM..... because that's what the city fathers want..... at least you got one hour more with the DJ... so dance and dance and dance.....

TAINO BEACH: WHERE ARE THE PATRONS ??

by schurlif Written May 12, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Taino Beach is a nice looking place on the way to Hotel Sosua by the Sea and Marina Beach Hotel, way at the end of Calle David Stern.
There seems to be a slight problem though... I was in Sosúa in January , peak of the high season...
And this place was always empty, during the day, during the evening, during the night...... and they have a sign ( probably quite old ) saying "Open 24 h".... even though since not too much time ago a decree was enacted curbing nightlife activities in bars, restaurants and discos after 1:00 AM... (!!!)
So, I guess, Taino Beach must have seen much better times in the 90's when mass tourism peaked....
I hope the owner will make it though because closing the place would be a shame....

Dress Code: No special "code ", come as you are but at least put a top or a t-shirt on..... lol.....

Directions: As I already mentioned , the last enterprise going/driving down Calle David Stern all the way to the end, on the right side......

~ Casa Marina Beach Bars ~: ~ All Inclusive Bars ~

    by Heavens-Mirror Written May 6, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We never really experienced the nightlife in Sosua. We went out of the hotel one night and wasnt keen on the resort and decided to go back to the hotel. It was a shame that we didnt experience the nightlife but i didnt feel very safe. So we spent most of our holiday around the free all inclusive bars at the Casa Marina Beach Hotel. Drinks are served from early in the morning until 11pm and there are four free bars to choose from all located along the beachfront.

There is also two cash bars at the hotel if you want to buy branded spirits or beer. There is also a disco at Casa Marina Beach called the Calypso Disco. It is open from 11pm until around 3-4am so it is ideal if you want a drink after 11pm. Drinks in the disco are not part of the all inclusive package but the prices are reasonably cheap.

Dress Code: Anything... most people dressed casual

Address: Casa Marina Beach Hotel, Sosua

MERENGUE CLUB, BAR CENTRAL, LATINOS CLUB: SOME SOSÚAN EXAMPLES OF WHAT MONEY CAN BUY

by schurlif Updated Feb 5, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

LOL.... you might hate the pictures.... but I thought they were so naive and innocent that they didn't even know that I could place the pics on the internet. And as I made nice friendship with these ladies of the night, even though I very politely refused their services if they did not insist, I thought , I cannot just post them here... They must have family , people who don't know how they make a living etc. and I just can't take the risk for them to be stigmatized if recognized. I remembered having seen fotos in the newspapers in Austria when I was like 10 or 12 years old. If there was a person pictured who had just been taken in by the police or something similar , the newspapers were forbidden to show the whole face as long as the person was just a suspect. A black bar across the eyes was mandatory and I remember how much I wondered about these black bars.... Lol... Today I have a reason to put one on myself.....

Well , these are just medium examples of the girls who come out at night like cockroaches to sweeten your male existence for just 2.000 Pesos = 60 U$.... but you could easily bargain them down to 45 U$. A casual acquaintance at Bar Central told me, he had "tried out" a few of them and LOL..... He said that they really didn't know their business well.... They just lack good know how....and put on a bored face as soon as real business begins... Well, they could include in the price some fake friendly and excited faces , couldn't they...? Otherwise , I think , they could or should work at some government office....

Dress Code: LOL.... funny question....... before , after or during business hours... ?

    Address: Especially on Pedro Clisante

Directions: They're concentrated between Sosua Life and Merengue Club but they're practically everywhere at night....... Whispering and calling you like the Sirens did with Ulisses.....

A pretty and cute daytime masseuse Madalena , a real pain in the neck.... This one was asocial and refused a foto.... Hm, slightly over the hill but still a nice person Malitza whom I called my Tina Turner

OCEAN WORLD , COFRESI: OCEAN WORLDS MAGIC NIGHTS.....

by schurlif Updated Feb 1, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Ocean World is a brand new complex for day time visiting of dolphins, sea lions, sting rays , sharks, tigers and tropical birds and at night a casino Las Vegas style with lush megashows featuring tall , beautiful women dancing casually wearing the feathers of the birds you just saw the same afternoon.... LOL...
As soon as you deboard your plane at Gregorio Luperon Airport and you got to walk like 300 meters or more untill you reach the place where you will be asked to pay 10 U$ for a tourist card ( that you will keep for about 15 minutes untill it is taken away from you, right after passport control and before customs....) , the outdoor sized propaganda for Ocean World on the walls will literally jump into your eyes.... and from now on , whether you're at the pool or in your room or at the beach, this propaganda being everywhere will follow you and you will be told that you CANNOT leave the DR without having seen the marvels Ocean World has to offer.....
It is a megamillion investment of one single german megamillionaire, maybe billionaire who brings the joys of Las Vegas and Sea World combined to the DR and now is in for a golden medal of the Dominican Republic for helping develop tourism and more cash flow on the north coast..... I have to admit , I didn't go to see Ocean World..... It seems to be a place to have a lot of fun when you're well accompanied by the right person...... Entry is somewhat like it would be in the USA , should be worth the visit , if it has to be....

Dress Code: I don't know....... but I simply guess that similar dress codes like in Sea World and Las Vegas apply...... after all ...... it's the tourist who's right and has the $$$... am I right ??

POWER TO THE TOURIST , MAY THE FORCE BE WITH HIM.....

Address: When in Cofresi , ask.....

Directions: Cofresi is a small town , maybe some 10 to 20 km west of Puerto Plata......
