Jitney Bus Tips (8)

Dishonest Bus Driver Took Tourists For A Ride

On October 30, 2014 our cruise ship arrived in Nassau, Bahamas. After walking around the tourist shopping area on Bay Street by the pier for a couple of hours, at around 2:30pm, the 3 of us New Yorkers boarded a No.10 jitney for a ride along the nice shoreline for a posted fare of $1.25 per person, and we were told by local people and the bus operators that the No. 10 bus would return to the same downtown spot in about 45 minutes to an hour. In a remote area when no other passengers were on the bus, the bus driver, who was medium built in blue jeans with very distinctive shoulder-length dreadlocks, stopped the bus and told us the fare would be $4 per person if we wanted to go back where we had boarded. We sensed something's wrong but for the kind of money involved we rather obliged and stayed out of trouble. Before we could take a picture of the bus or jot down the car plate number when we were dropped off, the bus driver quickly sped away. We asked the bus operators in the area about the bus fares we were asked to pay they all indicated that's not right. We told them we were going to report this somehow. A couple of blocks later a cop accosted us and asked us about what had happened. He reaffirmed that we should only paid $1.25 per person for the ride as long as we remained on the bus the whole time. He seemed to have some idea who the driver was, since most drivers didn't have long dreadlocks. Well, we just wish this wouldn't happen to other tourists to that island. And we were happy to be back to the ship on time.

Get around cheaply AND have fun

Local buses are well used mini-vans. Only 1 dollar per person each time you get on. They go just about anywhere. Just wait at the blue bus-stop sign. Of course there is no schedule! :-) Just hop on and hop off. The bonus is the stories from the drivers and other passengers. BTW , They stop everyday at 6PM. After that it is taxi or foot travel.

Your jitney bus ride

Get yourself a map -try one of the fancy air-conditioned buses. The drivers are very friendly and you can hold a converstaion with him for the entire trip. Surprisingly regardless of the length of the trip -expect to pay just $1.00US.

Jitney Buses

Use the Jitney buses whilst you are there, they run from early in the morning to about 7pm. Each trip costs$1.
From Sandyport to Nassau town by taxi cost around $27 so this was a very cheap form of travel.
You can see the whole island by Jitney bus but you have to change a few times.

Local Buses

We had a car but met tons of people who got around just fine on the local buses - they al have great names like Zelda's People mover or Al' fast Bus Service. They all cost the same and have set routes that can get you anywhere you want to go. They can get really busy and most if not all have no A/C

Now don't forget - Bahamians...

Now don't forget - Bahamians drive on the left side of the road! For those of you (like me) that are afraid to try this out (for fear of killing yourself and others), there are public minivans which provide transportation all throughout Nassau and the resort areas. These are very convenient, inexpensive, and much safer than taking your life in your hands by attempting to drive on the other side of the road. Of course, this is unless you're British, then it should be NO PROBLEM, MON!
