Procession of the Holy Blood Tips (3)

The relic of the Holy Blood

The great procession of the Holy Blood held each Ascension Day, when the bishop of Bruges carry the relic of the Holy Blood through the streets of the city. The procession culminates with the veneration of the relic, which is a fragment of cloth with trace of the coagulated blood of Jesus Christ wiped from his body by Joseph of Arimathea.

According to legend, the cloth was brought to Brugge during the Second Crusade by a Duke of Flanders.
It is more likely, however, that the cloth was brought by Baldwin of Flanders ( later the first emperor of the Latin Empire ) from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade, organized by Doge Enrico Dandolo of Venice and Marquis Boniface of Montferrat, when the city was sacked.

The relic is kept in a rock-crystal vial, which itself is inside a small glass cylinder adorned with a golden crown at each end. Normally it is exposed only on Fridays at a certain time in the Basilica of St. Basil on the Burg Square.

The last procession was held on 21 May 2009.

Adress: Burg 13, 8000 Brugge,
This church is located in the Burg square near the Town Hall.

Procession of the Holy Blood

Every year on Ascension Day, the historic city of Bruges attracts thousands of visitors to one of the great religious processions of Europe, the Holy Blood Procession. During this procession the relic of the Holy Blood (see must see tips), is carried through the medieval streets of Bruges. Half the parade is representing scenes from the old and New Testament interpreted by guild, trades, brotherhoods and chambers of rhetoric from the burgundain period. The second part of the procession is devoted to the relic of the blood of Jesus brought to Bruges by Derrick of Alsace, Count of Flanders after the second crusade in 1150.
