Favorite thing The main tourist attraction of the city of Brussels and its central tourist poist is a square called Grand Place (Big Square). It's not so big at least in comparison to say St. Mark Square in Venice or Market Square in Krakow, Poland - the biggest mediaeval square in Europe.
But the old, renovated houses around Grand Place looked really amazing either at daytime and at night when the square was heavy lighted. It was a paradise for old architecture lovers! And for those who like watching people :-)
Fondest memory Grand Place :-)
Favorite thing The beautiful La Grande Place (Grant Place)...
It is lined with cafes and restaurants so if you can afford it grab something to eat here and do some people watching. :) It's a nice place to spend a bit of time...
Favorite thing The guild houses were rebuilt between 1695 and 1700 after destruction by a bombardment by the french army in 1695 during the reign of Louis XIV . Their architectural style is a local interpretation of Italian Baroque. On the guild houses you can see little statues that are patrons of the different guilds.
Favorite thing Downtown Brussels is absolutely impressing. All around the central place there are different old beautiful buildings like the royal palace and the cathedral, the dukes of Brabant Hall and various guild halls. In the whole city I saw a lot of beautiful churches, govermental buildings etc.
Fondest memory Unfortunately my fondest memory is that Brussels next to all it´s beauty is really dirty. The subways, the streets, a lot of buildings very dirty.
Favorite thing Grande Place, the main square of Brussels
Fondest memory The old, very beautiful square, surrounded by the ancient houses of noble and rich commercial people. The buildings seem to compete with each others by their fine styles and architecture.
At the spring time there are flower festivals at the Grande Place.
Favorite thing Check out the music & light show at the Grand-Place...
Between April and September (and sometimes in December) the town square and its buildings are illuminated at night to the rythm of classical music!
There are two sessions lasting 15 minutes each night (at 9.30pm and 10.15pm or 11.15pm, depending on the sunset).
Favorite thing visit the city hall.
This is the most remarkable building of Brussels and one of the most beautiful gothic buildings of Belgium. The leftwing is a design from Jacques Van Thienen dated 1402; the rightwing had been built in 1449 by an unknown architect. The tower measures 90 meters in height and the wind vane measures up to 5 meters visualizing Saint Michael stabbing down a dragon. You can find more in the travelogue.
Favorite thing see still the Market place.
Facing the City Hall is the impressive so called “Broodhuis” (in those days a depository for the baker’s guild) and is surrounded by the 17th century’s guild houses. Nowadays during daytime there is a flower market, whereas in the evening the place is brightly illuminated.
Favorite thing see the market place. This is the heart of the old town and has an orthogonal shape measuring 110 by 68 meters. The City hall with its elegant belfry dominates this rather impressive square.
Favorite thing Go to the Grand'Place... incredibly beautiful and historic, and right in the middle of the city. You will find so many places to see, shop, and eat within easy walking distance...
Fondest memory Having dinner at the Aux Armes de Bruxelles on my first trip to Brussels... the meal was terrific!!! Many thanks to Vinnie Gambini!
Favorite thing The marketsquare, one of the world's most beautiful squares with the majestic cityhall and many enchanting patrician-houses.
Fondest memory My 'daughter' Isabelle Vos, that lived almost a year in Arnhem with me to learn the Dutch language and explore the environment.
The best you'll find in Brussels is the 'Grande Place'. Unlike other Belgian cities, the capital has changed a lot because of its importance in the European Union ans as an important city. That means that has lost a part of the 'charm' that you'll find in other Belgian villages... however, only the Grande Place is good enough to forget this: it's really beautiful to see those great buildings, the incredible gothic Townhall... and the houses of (métiers). For example, the 'King of Spain's House' a very interesting brewery in the heart of Brussels.
