A Journey Through History at the Temple of Jupiter
Once a sanctuary to the king of the gods, the Temple of Jupiter now serves as the cathedral's baptistery in Split. Its historical significance is highlighted by its remarkably intact structure.
Founded in the 3rd century, this Roman temple showcases a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a decorative frieze. It is notable for the striking bronze statue of St John the Baptist by Ivan Meštrović, which replaces the original statue of Jupiter. The font, crafted from 13th-century carved stones, is a recycled element from the cathedral’s rood screen. Only one column remains from the original porch, while a black-granite sphinx, defaced by early Christians, stands guard at the entrance.
