Ravintola Kappeli Tips (12)

Kappeli: Enjoy the sun and peoplewatching at the patio

Kappeli (The Chapel) is probably one of the most well known restaurants in Helsinki and it has been operating since 1867. The restaurant's past is full of nationally well-known clientèle including writer Juhani Aho, poet Eino Leino, composer Jean Sibelius as well as artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The restaurant still houses the table where Eino Leino used to sit.

Kappeli is also probably the only restaurant in the world that houses a painting on its kitchen wall. The painting is called "Gambrinius" and it is by a Finnish artist Albert Edelfeld. Gambrinius is a legendary king of Flanders, and an unofficial patron saint of beer or beer brewing.

The dining room itself houses a statue by Wäinö Aaltonen "Runon hengetär" (the Spirit of a poem) and the hall leading to the cafe is the home to Birger Kaipiainen's mosaic "Tanssivia pareja" (Dancing Couples) made in 1948.

Kappeli located next to the Market Square end of Esplanadi park. This is just the opposite direction from the Swedish Theatre. Its windows are enormous. This provides customers to see the park, the people passing by, the seasons changing.. In summer, the patio of Kappeli is packed with people wanting to enjoy the sun and look at the people walking by.

Kappeli: An old classic

Restaurant Kappeli is a good choice for those who want to experience a great dinner on a great restaurant at a great place. It is an old classic with a history back to 1867. I would say that the location can't be better. It is situated at the south end of the Esplanade in downtown Helsinki (observe, on the esplanade, not beside it, where a lot of other restaurants are located). It's a very famous restaurant and it is a fancy one. If we go back a few years, you weren't allowed to enter it if you didn't wore a suit or something else luxury. I have actually never eaten at Kappeli myself, but I have been inside it once, with my mother, when she wanted to show me that awesome place where she has eaten many years ago. The decor is very beautiful. The prices depends of course on what you eat, if it's a salad or a meat dish. I really recommend you, who want something special, to visit this restaurang. It will be worth it, enjoy!

Kappeli Restaurant: Scandinavian cuisine

There are over 600 restaurants in Helsinki. Kappeli is a very famous restaurant (since 1837).

Favorite Dish Scandinavian cuisine, e.g. the Kappeli sandwich (different Finnish fishes, egg, lettuce), good cakes and pastries, tea and coffee. Some very delicious dishes: creamy salmon soup, smoked reindeer mousse, slightly salted salmon with caper sauce, breast of duck, cold cranberry soufflé with cranberry sauce. The burbot season in the winter.

Kappeli: Coffee and cakes

The somewhat genteel atmosphere is very pleasant, and we made our visit on New Years Day! It was quiet, but the place was warm and had a very festive atmosphere.

I enjoy dropping into the restaurant, and as I visit at different times in the year I get to experience a different feel and ambience.

Favorite Dish Coffee and Chocolate cake

Kappeli: Just the place for a leisurely coffee

Kappeli is a rather ornate greenhouse/conservatory, with a restaurant and bar. The bar side also has a selection of light snacks on offer, with coffee and also draught beer. I visited after a recommendation from friends - they meet there but head on elsewhere as it is somewhat pricey - you pay for the surroundings. The place is relatively quiet and relaxed, with a large number of tables, including separate pergolas with their own tables - great for people watching.

The atmosphere is pleasant - everyone minds their own business and it is therefore a good place to chill out at over the weekend. It is self-service, apart from drinks, in the café part so there is no problems with the service and all in all it is well worth visiting.

Favorite Dish I had a very good blueberry turnover - washed down with a hot chocolate - admittedly not the cheapest I've ever had - at just shy of EUR 9 for the privilege. They also have Koff on draught - definitely my favourite Finnish beer!

Kappeli: Restaurant in Esplanad Boulevard

This pavilion-like building is of cast iron and glass. The building was designed by Axel Hampus Dalström and it was built in 1867.

The restaurant is quite expensive but popular. In the summertime the terrace is always packed. It is a good place to watch the regular free (mainly) jazz concerts on the opposite stage.

Kappeli: One of the most popular terraces in Helsinki

Kappeli offers beautiful views of the market square and Esplanadi.

In the summer terrace is the one of the most popular places to be. A perfect location in the centre of Helsinki, watching the hustle and bustle of people passing by. All ages come together here. At the opposite side of the terrace often live music is played. I'd recommend to go here on a sunny day.

Inside, is a design bar, where you can have a beer or 'warm up' before moving into the Sali to eat.

The Kappeli Sali is the place you can wine and dine. The menu varies with the seasons. Good food, and the price is in conjunction with it.

Last but not least, there is the section called Bar Café . Here you can get, next to beer, coffee, etc an assortiment of sandwiches.

All in all, inside and outside Kappeli, a great and trendy place to be for all ages.

They are currently expanding the terraces, which should be ready when summer 2005 starts.

The Kappeli Sali has a unique ambience. Kaisa Blomstedt, who has coaxed out a suitable mixture of cultural history and modern style, designed the new interior. The warm and stylish atmosphere is made up of the beauty of the Esplanadi Park and the fascinating elegance of the glass veranda.

Scandinavia is the theme of the Menu. All the options are appetite wetting. Modern dishes and entire meals are served according to the customers wishes.

Kappeli: For romantic winter evenings

Kappeli is divided in two sections: a coffeehouse and a restaurant.

This coffeehouse is full of feeling! If you appreciate classical beauty, romantic atmosphere and big windows this is the place. The building itself is probably the most romantic in Helsinki: there's a taste of the classy Paris.

Though many people prefer the terrace in the summer, I love Kappeli most in the winter evenings. It's cold and dark outside but inside it's cosy: soft lightning, candles...

The clientele is a little older than in other cafes. Especially in the evenings you will find groups of middle aged people spending an evening here.

Favorite Dish In the coffeehouse the normal stuff: sandwiches and cakes. Small portions. I have sometimes tried their cakes: ok, but nothing to die for. Their sandwiches have never appealed to me . The best choice is aubergine pie that is very filling and good.

In the lunch time (till 15.00) offered soup for 7.00 euros ( I consider it a bit expensive)

Cafe Kappeli: A must!

It's lovely to sit outside in summer and watch all the people pass by. There was a Jazz festival when we were there in summer - it was a lovely hour we spent here! In winter this place is perfect to hang around for a while with a hot drink --- unfortunately it's very expensive! A cookie will cost you €2!

Favorite Dish Expensive cake and Jazz music in the sun!

Kappeli = Chapel: Kappeli = Chapel

Very famous place and it is always crowded especially summertime the terrace. It is nice to have a cup of coffee and see people to walk by in the Esplanadi-park. Kappeli opened its doors again 21 April 2001. There was a big renovation. Great place!
