Movies and Paris Tips (34)

Rue St-Julien-le-Pauvre - Céline & Jesse's Journey

Recognize this photo?
That's right - it's one of the opening sequences to Before Sunset!! Before Sunset is one of those movies that completely captures the imagination about Paris. Compared favorably to other "talky" movies such as My Dinner with Andre and Eric Rohmer films, it's filled with scenes of off-the-beaten-path Paris (you won't even see the Eiffel Tower in this movie). If you've ever visited this city you'll know this film possesses the essence of The City of Light. I saw this movie twice on the big screen (I had to go back just to write down the street names) and now own the DVD and its accompanying soundtrack (a fantastic one complete with Julie Delpy singing). Many people wrote to me asking questions about the different sites of the movie so I felt compelled to write up tips.

After they meet up in Shakespeare & Co. on rue de Bucherie in the 5th arrondissement, Jesse & Céline walk outside of the bookstore, go right & turn a right onto rue St-Julien-le-Pauvre. On this street is the Hôtel Esmerelda & the English tea room, The Tea Caddy, opened in 1928 by a retired English governess to the Rothschild family. Across the street lies the Square René Viviani.

The Fatal Image

Hotel Notre Dame
1 Quai St-Michel - 5th arrondissement

Here's another site of a movie, The Fatal Image, starring Michelle Lee & Justine Bateman. Not a bad movie but the Paris scenes are just incredible. In this movie, the hotel is shown briefly during a car chase scene.

This is located at the crossroads of Quai St-Michel and rue Petit Pont near the Petit Pont that takes you to Notre Dame.

UNESCO

Avenue de Suffren - 7th arr

UNESCO - cleverly disguised (ahem!) under the name of URESCO, where Audrey Hepburn's character, Regina Lampert, worked as a simultaneous translator in the 1963 Stanley Donen thriller classic movie Charade.

I loved how the purple in the poster mimicked the purple of the sky!

Rue Eginhard - Celine & Jesse's Journey

From the Jardins St-Paul area, Celine & Jesse continue their journey in the Marais, wonderfully exemplified by its ancient cobblestoned historic-filled streets. They turn right onto Rue Charlemagne (that big church ahead of you that you saw in Before Sunset is the back of Eglise St-Louis-St-Paul), then dip into Rue Eginhard (a cool little passage with an ancient well), then down Rue St-Paul towards Rue St-Antoine.

At the corner of Rue St-Paul & Rue St-Antoine is my favorite patisserie in the Marais (and possibly in Paris), Miss' Manon.

Rue Galande - Céline & Jesse's Journey

From rue St-Julien-le-Pauvre, Jesse & Celine continue their conversation & their walk up rue Galande and continue east to rue Dante; all of this is in the heart of the historic tangle of streets in the Latin Quarter. On the corner to the left is a famous jazz club, Le Caveau des Oubliettes.

Quai Henri IV - Céline & Jesse's Journey

Continuing their journey & their free-flowing conversation in the movie, Before Sunset, Jesse & Celine disembark from the Canauxrama at Port Henri IV. Celine then tells Jesse's driver to drop her off at her apartment near Metro Chateau d'Eau at 18 rue des Petites Ecuries in the 10th arrondissement. The only problem is that the scene for her apartment is actually at the Cour de l’Etoile d’Or in the 11th arrondissement (where they could easily have walked to from Le Pure Cafe or the Promenade Plantee).

Difficult to locate on a map, even on Les Pages Jaunes, the entrance to the passage/cour is located at:
75-77 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine

Port de l'Arsenal - Céline & Jesse's Journey

After their walk along the Promenade Plantee in the movie Before Sunset, Celine & Jesse pick up a Canauxrama at Port de l'Arsenal for their journey up the Seine. This is where it gets tricky as it appears they get off somewhere at the Port Henri IV.

Promenade Plantée - Céline & Jesse's Journey

The next jump in Before Sunset involves going from Le Pure Cafe to la Promenade Plantée & Viaduc des Arts in the 12th arrondissement. Formerly a railway line, this long train tracks area has been converted into a series of shops below with a long narrow park running atop. A fantastic idea that NYC is in the process of putting to use.

To easily traverse from Le Pure Cafe to the Promenade Plantee, walk back down Rue Faidherbe to hop back onto the line 8 Metro at the Faidherbe-Chaligny stop, direction Creteil-Prefecture. Travel 3 stops to the Daumesnil stop where you'll switch lines to catch line 6 to the Bel-Air stop (direction Nation). This stop provides direct access to le Promenade Plantee which you may walk west all the way to Place de la Bastille. The trip from Le Pure Cafe to the Promenade Plantee is approximately 20 minutes. The walk from the Bel-Air stop to Place de la Bastille is roughly a 40-minute walk dependent upon your pace.

Click HERE to continue the journey to the Port de l'Arsenal where they embark onto a Canauxrama bateau.

Click HERE to go back to Le Pure Cafe.

Le Pure Café - Céline & Jesse's Journey

After their jaunt in the Marais in the film Before Sunset, Jesse & Celine take a quick jump to Le Pure Café in the 11th arrondissement (near Place de la Bastille). To get there quickly, from Rue St-Paul take a right onto rue St-Antoine, walk about 10 minutes to Metro Bastille, hop on line 8 direction Creteil Prefecture, get off 2 stops later at the Faidherbe-Chaligny stop. Walk north 2 long blocks along Rue Faidherbe, take a right onto Rue Jean Mace. You'll find the cafe at the intersection of rue Jean Mace & Impasse Franchemont. The address is 14 rue Jean Macé. Walking & using the Metro yields another 20-minute trip.

Click HERE to continue the journey on the Promenade Plantée/Viaduc des Arts.

"Before Sunset"

I viewed both "Before Sunset" and it's prequel "Before Sunrise" as have many here I'm sure. Both movies tell the tale of French Celine and American Jesse finding each other by chance on a train ("Before Sunrise") and again in a Paris bookstore ("Before Sunset"). These two films are a couple of my favorite all-time movies.

One of the joys of watching "Before Sunset" is getting to see Paris again and again! There are lots of landmarks in the film and some that are ordinary yet you know that you probably have walked the same streets and seen the same sights before as the two characters have done.

Celine and Jesse took a walk from the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore to the rue Galande nearby. It's a short curved medieval street that's in the Latin Qtr.
