Gosnay Things to Do

  • The mill

The first mention of a water mill of Gosnay dates from the 16th century. It was built next to the river "La Lawe" that floats through Gosnay and was used to grind grain and twist oil until 1977.Now it is called "Le Nid du Moulin" (the Nest of the mill) and is the home to handicapped adults.

  • Gosnay's church

In the middle of town next to the main street, you will find the Saint Leger church. The nave and the chorus were entirely dismounted and rebuilt in 1746.At the occasion of the Jubilee of the birth of Christ, the painter Rene Ducourant made some paintings for a project of Contemporary Sacred Art. You can admire his paintings in the church.

  • Typical houses

Gosnay is a typical mine workers town. In former days, the people of this village worked in the mines of Bruay, some 5 km west of Gosnay. The mining company had these houses built for its workers. The mining industry is gone, the houses are what is left of that period.

  • Landscape

Gosnay is a little rural village surrounded by fields and a forest. It's a nice place with a magnificent hotel to relax after visiting the busy cities of Arras, Bethune and St. Omer.

  • Gosnay's monasteries

The little town of Gosnay is quite exceptional because of its two monasteries. The one on the pic is 'La Chartreuse du Mont Sainte-Marie' and the other one is 'La Chartreuse du Val St. Esprit', that now shelters a renowned hotel and restaurant complex. We had a wonderful time here.
