Leos Brasserie: Good and inexpensive food

    by King_Golo Written Jan 31, 2016

Offering a wide range of local specialties (such as Maultaschen) as well as some more international dishes, Leos is often my port of call when I go out to get some lunch. I visit quite regularly and have never been disappointed. Most of the food is inexpensive and of high quality (approximately € 10 per main dish), but some posher alternatives such as deer goulash will cost a bit more. You'll get a small dessert for free along with every main course. Leos has a nice and friendly atmosphere inside with some bigger and smaller tables available, along with a bar if you only want to come for a drink. It's open from lunchtime till late.

Favorite Dish: A very good salad is "Salat Baden-Baden" with chanterelles which makes my mouth water by just thinking about it. I also like their Spätzlepfanne (Swabian egg noodles) and their schnitzels.

    Ilysia: Delicious Greek food

    by King_Golo Written Jan 31, 2016

When you are hungry and crave for some really hearty food and a good wine along with it, then you should stop by at Ilysia, Tuttlingen's best Greek restaurant. Located conveniently just outside the centre, Ilysia is open both for lunch and dinner, but I've been there for dinner only. You do well to reserve (0049 7461 9629317) as it does get quite busy in the evenings. The menu encompasses treats from all over Greece, ranging from Souvlaki and Moussaka to several grilled dishes. Whatever I chose so far was really good. A small Greek salad is served with most of the dishes. Go for their house wine, if you want to enjoy an inexpensive good wine along with the food. Apart from the food, the fast and friendly service as well as the nice interior have to be noted.

Favorite Dish: Most of the times I went to Ilysia I chose one of their grills. I've never been disappointed as all of them are hearty and delicious.

    Address: Königstraße 17, 78532 Tuttlingen

Directions: From the market square walk towards the Catholic church. After 200m, Ilysia is on your left.

Vinzenz' Weinkeller: Great food in an unusual location

    by King_Golo Written May 26, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In a small side street with the funny name "Hinterm Bild" (Behind the Picture) you can find one of Tuttlingen's best restaurants. "Vinzenz' Weinkeller", often shortened to "Vinzenz", is located in a cellar with lots of old stones and wooden beams. The slightly gloomy character is compensated by the friendly interior and of course the excellent food. The menue ranges from finest meats grilled on lava stones to crisp salads with a twist, from hearty local cuisine to interesting international delicacies such as ostrich with potato wedges. The servings are sometimes quite generous, and always very tasty. In addition, "Vinzenz' Weinkeller" has a lot of wines on offer and the staff is well-trained in advising you about the best accompaniment for your dish.

Favorite Dish: Boeuf Bourgignon was a masterpiece, but I also loved the Gaucho Meat Skewers

Address: Hinterm Bild 3, 78532 Tuttlingen

Directions: Coming from the Marktplatz, you have to cross the Danube and continue to your right until you see a Greek restaurant. The small street next to it is Hinterm Bild, "Vinzenz' Weinkeller" is on your left.

Gasthaus Engel: Central location, great food

    by King_Golo Written Apr 8, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

"Engel" is the German word for angel, and once you enter this restaurant you know why they've chosen it: angels are everywhere, from kitschy to artsy-fartsy, from stylish to interesting. Apart from them, the next obvious thing is the towel with a recipe for elephant soup. Swabian-style humour? Who knows! In any case, Gasthaus Engel is a pleasant place to be and offers very good local and Swiss cuisine. While the front part of the restaurant is dedicated mostly to local cuisine, the extra room at the back of it calls itself "Röstirante" and specialises in röstis, the traditional Swiss dish. There are also a few seats outside.

Favorite Dish: So far, I have three favourites: the rösti with bacon and eggs, the so-called Sieben-Schwaben-Spieß (meat on a skewer) and mixed vegetables and beef in an "exotic" sauce. In general, I found that the dinner menu is better and more upmarket.

Address: Obere Hauptstraße 4, 78532 Tuttlingen

Directions: as central as possible - the market place is just 10m away

Friggi: A small, friendly Italian place

    by King_Golo Written Apr 8, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Friggi is a small place in the city centre which offers a few Italian dishes and pastries. There is normally a lunch menu for € 4.50, which is a good deal even for a place so far off the beaten path such as Tuttlingen. They have a selection of Italian groceries to buy as well.

I often come here for lunch as their pizzas are great - you can immediately see that the owners are Italian and know their profession. Their pastries are a treat, too. I haven't tried to come at other times, but as Friggi is open from 8am to 7pm you can even have breakfast here.

    Favorite Dish: PIZZA!

    Address: Oberamteistraße 20, 78532 Tuttlingen

Directions: only a 2-minute walk away from the market square
