Watch out! Berliner Bears!

In Berlin you find lots of bears, lucky you they are not so dangerous!

The Buddy Bear Story

Everything started in Berlin in June 2001. In front of the KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens – department store) the „Buddy Bear Berlin Show“ – so the title of our first Buddy Bear activity in Berlin – was launched. We wanted the people of Berlin and the visiting tourists to enjoy the painted bear sculptures. The raised arms of the upright Buddy Bears communicated a friendly attitude and optimism. Thus the bears created a positive atmosphere from day one, which was captured on camera by tourists from all over the world on a daily basis.

The Buddy Bears were such a great success that the authorities not only suggested an extension of the street exhibition until the end of 2002, but also authorised it. At the same time, many companies and private individuals approached us and bought Buddy Bears for their home country or hometown, which increasingly turned the Buddy Bears into global ambassadors of Berlin.

Watch out for the bear - the symbol of Berlin

Whenever strolling around in the center of Berlin – you will see bears.
As a statue : Bears in all kinds of outfit – different colours and often staying before the entrance of a hotel or pub
On flags : an upstanding black bear with the tongue and cralls in red
Why and when this bear became symbol of the city is not clear
Most probably it goes back to the 12th century :
Albrecht Bear (Albrecht den Bären) was than the 1st Margrave of Brandenburg

Running Wild

If you take a walk in one of the forests in the Berlin area, keep your eyes open for wild boar. I have seen several in the forest near to where I live but have had no problems with them, but they can be dangerous and they are wild animals.

Watch out for the snakes in Friedrichstrasse station! I'd hate to be a night-watchman here. On display in the main shopping area are many different types of snakes. I'm not sure of the reason behind this - maybe to entice people to visit Berlin Zoo.
