Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse Restaurants

  • Restaurant with their own Brewery

This brewery restaurant (or is it restaurant brewery) had a modern looking dining room (kind of a bistro look) with mainly traditional German meals. The waitress spoke some English and was tolerant of our broken German. The food was very good and their beer was tasty. They had a nice selection of wines from the region (the whites are very good)....

  • Down in the cellar

The place is a restaurant as well as a pub/bistro. The restuarant is located in the cellar. It is well known for specialieties from the hot stone - you prepare the meat by your one on a hot stone at the table. In summertime the bistro also offers places outside on the old market place as well as in their nice toscany garden in the backyard. Brunch...

Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse Local Customs

  • Lunch on New Year's Eve

It is said that you have to eat "sauerkraut" on New Year's Eve so that you always have money in the new year. A traditional lunch is therefore mashed potatoes with sauerkraut and meat. The meat will be for example blood and liver sausages (I never ever eat those!!!) or smoked pork chop. I normally visit my parents to have lunch with them but...

With the begining of the grape-harvesting the time of the new wine also called Federweisser starts. Together with Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) it is now the local food to eat!!! A hike into the hills

by TomInGermany Written Dec 18, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This hike starts at the Guldenklinger Hohe Parking lot on the B460 about 4 miles east of Heppenheim. It is 11 miles long and took me almost 4 hours.

From the parking lot cross the road and get on the "white cross" trail heading north. (the trail sign looks like a white railroad crossing sign). Stay on this trail for about 30 minutes before turning onto the "red line" trail at the "Jagerrest" gazebo. You will stay on this trail until you are almost to Starkenburg, Heppenheim's castle. Get off the trail and take road up to the castle. Spend some time walking around the castle and get some great photos looking down on the town.
When you are ready, take the "blue B" trail down into the town. Another option is to backtrack back down the road and take the wine trail down into the town. Both trails will take you to the altstadt (old city) and the church which you should have some nice photos of from the castle.
From here you will take the "upside down yellow T" trail back up the valley. You can take this all the way back to the "white cross" trail and hang a right back to the parking lot or you can get onto the "K1" trail which is a slightly shortly trail back to the car. Along the way you will see an old amphitheater (not sure how old).

I used Map 5 of the Bergstrasse-Odenwald series but Map 8 would have been better. Too bad I don't own that one.

I added a website of a German site that has a listing of numerous hikes in the Odenwald area. The one that pops up is a longer version of the hike I described.

This time it is toward Heppenheim. Starkenburg Heppenheim from above Altstadt at Christmas on a Sunday morning. It was raining in Heppenheim.

  • Bruchsee

The lake is not a natural one. I don't know exactly when it was established. But it is said that during highway constrution works much sand was needed and that's how the hole came. Now it is a place where people come to have a walk, go jogging or biking. It is just a place where you can relax. Some people even come for fishing but I hardly can...
