Leineschloss Tips (6)

Platz der Goettinger Sieben

The "Goettinger Sieben (Seven from Goettingen)" have been seven professors of the University of Goettingen in the beginning of the 19th century.

When the newly founded constitution of the Kingdom of Hannover from 1833 was changed by King Ernst August in 1837 the professors protested. By order of the king they lost their jobs and three of them had to leave the kingdom. These events had a strong influence on the national assembly in Frankfurt 1848.

The names of the Goettinger Sieben:

* Wilhelm Eduard Albrecht
* Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann
* Heinrich Ewald
* Jacob Grimm
* Wilhelm Grimm
* Georg Gottfried Gervinus
* Wilhelm Eduard Weber.

Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm are nowadays more famous because of their collection of German fairy tales like "Aschenputtel" "Dornroeschen" or "Rotkaeppchen". Most children in Germany know at least two or three of this tales.

The bronze monument is made by the Italian artist Floriano Bodini.

Leine Palace

This palace near the Old Town of Hannover has been the home of the Kings of Hannover. The first palace has been build in 1640. It has been constantly altered since then. What you see today is mainly the neo-classical portico, which was build 1826 by Architect Georg Ludwig Laves.

Between 1956 and 1962 the palace was rebuilt as the seat of the parliament of Lower Saxony.

In 1701 the palace was witness to the historic moment, when the Earl of Macclesfield handed over to Electress Sophia the Deed of the Act of Succession, which declared her and her successors heirs to the English Crown.

On the pic you see the Leine Palace on the right and the Leine River in the middle.

Leine Castle & Lower Saxonian State Government

The history of the castle dates back to the 12th century. In 1636 when the Duke of Calenberg took residence in Hannover the building was redecorated. In 19th century the castle burned out completely, only the portico remained. Later a new assembly hall was added. Today it is seat of the Lower Saxonian State Government.
