Village of Agia Irini is about 3 kilometers up from Rethymno.
While you are walking you can enjoy of views of Rethymno and villages around it. And when you arrive to Agia Irini you must visit in local home pub to get some refreshments and of course in monastery if it's doors are open.

There is a small private beach east of Georgioupoli we like to go to.
The beach is great if you are staying in Rethymno and you don't like crowded city beach. It is only 15 min drive away.
In order to get there you have to look at my GoogleEarth picture where I tryed to "dot" the very anrrow road to the beach from National Highway.
We love that tiny beach because the water is great, the sand is nice, view is fantastic (you can see the whole Georgioupoli to the west). There is only several umbrellas and a small taverna serving casual greek food. There is also small gazebo with a bar and a very nice Bulgarian bartender. The bathroom are always clean and there is always plenty of parking space. The town of Georgioupoli with all the hotels and tavernas is also close by.
We went to our beach again and we could not recognize it. It was totally different beach. Supposedly winter storm did so much damage to it, the owner rebuild few buildings and made few changes.
Our Bulgarian bartender was not there anymore.
Beach was more crowded and larger ( I man greater distance between water, your bed, and cold beer!).
One positive change....the food was fabulous!!!
We had fantastic fried zucchini of a size and color of 50 Euro Cents.
Great home fries, and nice size greek salad. Beer was colder than last year.
So, YES it is still a nice beach. You should still go, and park your car and eat nice lunch, but the beach stretches for miles, so you can walk and find your own favorite beach chair and umbrella......
The Late Minoan Cementery of Armeni is located about 10 km south from Rethymno town. There are about 200 tombs dated in the Late Minoan period (13th / 12th century BC).
Open daily: from 8 til 15h.
Tip under construction.

In Rethymno there are many places were you can rent scooters and when it´s hot it also works a bit refreshing. Just rent a scooter and go in the mountains around Rethymno and enjoy the view on the city and the meditarenean... Wonderfull!
Just be aware that the roads are not always in perfect condition!
Not far south of Rethymno, near the town of Armeni, is a Minoan cemetary with over 200 tombs from the late Minoan period cut from the rock. This makes an interesting pit stop if you're on your way to the south coast, or you could make a visit if you're just staying in Rethymno. The setting of the cemetary is quite nice because it's in a forest of oak trees that provide some welcome shade to visitors.
The cemetary is easy to find because it's right next to the highway that goes south from Rethymnon to Moni Prevali and other destinations on the south coast. Just look for the sign marking it.
Not far from Rethymno, to the southeast of the city, is the monestary of Moni Arkadhi. The monestary is situated in the picturesque foothills of the Psiloritis mountain range and used to be one of the richest in all of Crete. The monestary has a lot of historical significance as well, and for that reason is one of the most celebrated monestaries on the island.
Getting to and from the monestary is quite easy using the bus. If you prefer to take a taxi, it is 20 Euros one-way from Rethymnon's old city, so I don't recommend this unless you are splitting the fare with at least two other people.
One word of warning: Either eat before you go or bring your own food, because the one and only cafeteria near the monestary is very expensive and not very good at all.
Bali is 31 km away from Rethymnon. Bali in Turkish means a place of honey. In addition, indeed Bali had many beehives years ago.Nowadays, this beautiful fishing place may not produce honey anymore, but it has developed many tourist occupations. Around the settlement, you will find beautiful sandy beaches and small lee picturesque harbors. The main beach is also beautiful, organized with small pebbles
If you wan to see something outside of the normal tourist areas, then take a walk to the mountain area Gavaliana. It's quite near the old town and the beach, so it can be a good tree hour journey when you get tired of all sun, bath and ice cream. There are not so many roads up there, just check the map, it's easy to find the road. When leaving the tourist streets you will quite soon see some more genuine houses, children playing on the streets and some old people just sitting and waiting for something to happen. A hot day the trip up on the top can get you to want to go back to the ice cream anyway, but don't give up. When you get on the top you will find a very nice little church, and a splendid view over the town of Rethymnon.
