    Windmills

by apbeaches Updated Aug 20, 2015

The Mykonos windmills are iconic feature which can be seen from every point of the village of Mykonos, the island's principal village. The first thing we saw when coming into the harbor were the windmills that stand on a hill overlooking the area. Most windmills face towards the North where the island's climate sources its strongest winds over the largest part of the year. There are currently 16 windmills on Mykonos of which seven are positioned on the famous landmark hill in Chora. Most of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century, but construction continued into the early 20th century. They were primarily used to mill wheat. They were an important source of income for the inhabitants. Their use gradually declined until they ceased production in the middle of the 20th century. Their architecture is similar. They all are white, round, have a pointed roof and very small windows. These windmills are found in almost all Cyclades islands. One of these windmills has been transformed into a museum.

The windmills of Mykonos look great. You can see them from the coastal cafe/s near the bus station

There is plenty to do in the immediate area, cafe's, bar's, and have a look round the immediate harbour.

A nice place to while away part of the day :)

The venetian windmills are some kind of landmark of Mykonos and you can see them in many postcards. You will have your photos here for sure and it's amazing during the sunset. They were 16 of them all over the island in the past but these 5 we see here in Mykonos town are the most famous. They first ones were built in early 16th century.

Windmills were very helpful because they were using the non stop winds of the area to grind agricultural harvest (grain) so later to be exported all over Mediterranean sea (probably that’s why they are located near the port).

One of them is a now a house while another one is used a jewelry store.

    Address: Chora of Mykonos

Directions: You can see them on the hill up on the right side of Little Venice area.

Probably the most recognisable feature of Mykonos (next to everything being painted white) would be the windmills. Originally 16 in number, they were used to grind the agricultural harvests by harnessing the famous Mykonos wind for power. The five that overlook Mykonos Town (Hora or Chora) are probably the most famous. And just like the Matterhorn in Zermatt and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, wherever you go in Mykonos Town, they can be seen.

    Windmills

    by Tom_Fields Written Feb 12, 2010

If Mykonos has an iconic symbol, it's the windmills. They were built starting in the 16th century, to grind grain in preparation for shipment. Sea-going vessels would stop by to drop it off, then pick up the milled flour for transport all over the eastern Mediterranean. So it was important to build them near the harbor. Sadly, only a handful remain today.

One of the attractions of Mykonos are the wind mills which have gained fame in one of the James Bond Movies. Beautifully aligned they overlook the bay of Mykonos. This is one of the most photographed sights on the island. Some have become available for rent and one can actually life in these wind mills.

There are 5 windmills located in the vicinity of Little Venice. These are the icons of Mykonos. Traditionally, these windmills were used as grinding mills, deriving its power from the wind. Today, these white circular buildings with conical roofs have been restored as residential dwellings, shops and a museum.

    Address: Hora, Mykonos.

Directions: Walk from the main waterfront towards Little Venice. You will see the windmills.

At one time there were many windmills on the island and they were used to grind grain. There are far fewer now, but you will still find them. Many of the remaining are nonfunctional and a few have been converted into homes. Cool house! The most famous and most frequently photographed are the row of windmills overlooking the town of Hora,

    Address: Hora, Mykonos.

Directions: The town of Hora, up a small hill from the Alefkandra area. You really can't miss them!

I would not go up the hill just for taking a picture, but my Hostel was up the hill so I took this picture of the mills while going down to the village.
Did I told you that I liked the mills a lot?

If you take a boat/ferry to arrive/departure/tour etc. from/to Mykonos, don`t miss the view of the mills from the Sea.
From some streets in the village you will have a beautiful view of them, but the best one is going a little bit further from the coast...

Previously, there were many windmills throughout Mykonos. The windmills were used to mill flour. They now have fallen into disuse, one is actually a house now. They are a sight to be seen at night

The island is known for its windmills, but I wasn't that impressed looking at them up close. They look like they need serious sprucing up and repair.

    They look better at nite.

Directions: South west part of town...close to Little Venice.

    In need of some TLC.

Built during the long rule of the Venetians, the windmills actually still milled flour until recent years. One is a house now. All of them together serve as a photographer's prop gloriously.
