One of the main buildings at Eleftherias square in the heart of Kos Town is Dimotiki Agora. It’s the Municipal Market that is housed in a nice Italian building that was built in 1934 by Rodolfo Petracco.
Originally a market for fruits and vegetables I was surprised to see a good variety of herbs/spices, olive oil, honey, cheese, fruits and vegetables of course, dry fruits, nuts, spoon desserts, the famous domataki (local candied cherry tomatoes) and other nice things that worth to try or buy as a gift. We bought some herbs, dry fruits and nuts but also some beers because of a concert that evening in the square.
Of course there are also regular souvenirs, sea shells and sponges so most tourists will be happy anyway.

From the harbor we crossed the road for Kazouli square, there are some café and restaurants around but if you follow the pedestrian street upwards (it’s the street that leads to Eleftherias square) you will see numerous small stores strategically located (most visitors will walk there anyway) selling souvenirs, clothes etc
We didn’t buy anything but this is a good place if you’re after another fridge magnet or baseball cap or t-shirt or ouzo bottles or perfums or leather goods or oil soaps … (ok, you get the picture). Of course you will see such stores all over the old town. Personally I would go for some local herbs, locally produced honey, pastries or just fresh bread in the morning from a local bakery
The truth is we were buying supplies from small stores in the back streets or at the big Carrefour market near our hotel but the first day we were at the harbor and decided to check the City Market which is in convenient location close to the action.
The place is extremely expensive for a normal greek market, no surprise of course considering they are focusing on tourists. We deciced to buy only a few items (some bisquits and water) but the funniest thing happened at the cashier when she told us the final price in English and then oh I’m sorry I’m used to talk to them all day… :)

The best place to shop for food and other daily stuff is Vasiliadis supermarket. It's a large two-storey shop located to the right on the way from downtown Kos to Lambi. As far as I noticed locals do their shopping at Vasiliadis' as it's the cheapest and best supplied shop.

Anything you need can be bought on the spot. Greece is a relatively cheap country. I noticed that tourists from the UK found Greek tobacco products very attractive. A friend of mine who is a doctor was very interested in some medicines which are much cheaper there than in Poland.
