Saint Stephen’s Basilica: A Monumental Testimony
Saint Stephen's Basilica, the largest church in Budapest, is an architectural marvel and spiritual center. This neoclassical cathedral took over half a century to complete, officially finishing in 1905.
Commissioned by architect Miklós Ybl, its history includes a dome collapse in 1868 that necessitated a complete rebuild. The basilica can accommodate up to 8,500 worshipers and is truly the most revered Catholic church in Hungary. Visitors can ascend to the dome for breathtaking views of the cityscape. The basilica also houses the Holy Right Chapel, containing the mummified right hand of King St Stephen, a revered relic restored from a Bosnian monastery in 1771.
