Ancient Porn in Pompeii

Pompeii was famous for its brothels and a "phallic symbol" on the street walls points to where these establishments were. The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls.
Tired and stressed Romans who needed to relax went to these places, and the roads in front of it have deeply grooved "tracks", meaning that many carts wheeled by this place (lucrative business). The walls inside are adorned by a menu of "positions" from which clients may choose. The bed looks very small though, haha....but it's amazing that these erotic paintings have been preserved but I do think the color might completely erode someday as it is exposed to the elements.

The Evil Eye and the House of Ill Repute

Many homes have large paintings on the walls near the entrance to the home of a Priapus with oversized male appendage. This is done to chase away the evil eye, commonly believed in down the centuries. In contrast, there are paintings of erotic scenes on the walls of the House of Ill Repute showing the activities usually available there.

Lupanar

It may not be listed on visitor guide but our tour guide took us there. Wow! Was amazing! Took several pictures. Not allowed to use flash but wasn't needed. Pompeii itself was amazing. Sin City for sure!

Most Ancient Profession

The building known by the ancient Latin epithet LUPANAR has ten small rooms on two floors.
Rooms on the upper floor are more separate from the another and more spacious.
Certainly these rooms are intended for the more well-to-do clients.

Brothels

Some of the mot interesting remains are those of the brothels. These are places where men would go to have a good time with prostitutes. In Pompeii, there were a number of these and in a few, there are good examples of erotic frescoes remaining.

The Brothel

Yes, Pompeiians also had that type of amousements :)
It has separted small rooms with stone beds (how unconfortable!) You find frescos on the wall with spicy scenes of the ancient ways of... well you know! :)
This is one of the top spots tourists look for when visiting the ruins.

Lupanare

The Lupanare was an house built on two floors that you can see very well nowadays. The use of this house is revealed by the beautiful erotic paintings and by the graffiti that you can admire on the interior walls. The paintings show the "services" that were offered to the clients in the cellae (with the the bed) that you can see on the ground floor.

Via Lupanare

Via Lupanare is located on the west side of the Terme Stabiane. It is a typical street of Pompeii. At the beginning you can see a big stone in the middle of the street: it is an ancient pedestrian passage and you can see signs left by the wheels of the wagons. Along this street you can see the hospitium Sittii which was a modest hotel, some houses (one with an interesting fresco (a snake?) on the facade) and the Lupanare (See the following tip).

The Brothels

The lupanar was the official brothel of Pompeii. As a trading town, it was visited every day by large numbers of people, especially traders from other towns.
The brothel is situated at the intersection of two side roads on Via dell’Abbondanza near the town centre, not far from the Forum and the Stabian Baths (which had a rear entrance on the Vicolo del Lupanare

The Brothel: The "Real" Pompeii

Yeah, its true, there was a brothel in Pompeii. Apparently these people really knew how to party! While the brothel is not on the visitor map they pass out at the entrance, if you look hard enough you will find it. Much like any modern day brothel you must look for a place thats located down a dark, winding street, away from the "nicer" part of town. I have a feeling most of the guys will have no trouble finding Pompeii's brothel, for you clean living ladies just follow your man! The brothel itself is dark, cramped and filled with little rooms that have fossilized beds in them. Above each room is a pornographic fresco of the different positions and services that were offered at the time. Historians have yet to say if any parties were "caught" in the act during the eruption. Though many historians agree that there may have been minor eruptions in that part of town previous to Vesuvius erupting.
