Trastevere Tips (9)

Piazza S.Maria in Trastevere

Favorite thing This is the main square in Trastevere and its lovely church has its facade decorated with the mosaics of the 13th century. It occupies the 5th place in the hierarchy of Roman churches after St Peter's, St.Paul, St.John and S.Maria Maggiore for its ancient origins as well as for being the first dedicated to Madonna.

Trastevere

Favorite thing Trastevere is the quaintest part of Rome with its narrow alleyways and eateries galore. Its very popualar/lively at night and hence we chose to eat this side of the River most nights.

Fondest memory The rustic colours of this building with the washing hanging out just typified this area for me.

Mosaics of S.Maria in Trastevere

Favorite thing Santa Maria Maggiore, the large church near to Termini is reputed to have the best mosaics of the churches in Rome. Unfortunately I didn't see that church as it was under restoration but the mosaics at S.Maria in Trastevere must be a close second - they were stunning.

Santa Maria in Trastevere

Favorite thing I don't know how many churches have the name Santa Maria in Rome but there are several. I had a closer look inside the Santa Maria de Trastevere.

I really liked the palmtree paintings on the wall outside.

Trastevere

Favorite thing Across the river Tiber you will find the Trastevere area. The area is not as classy as other areas in Rome, but the people who live there are very proud and consider themselves the true Romans.

Walk through the streets of this neighbourhood and take some beautiful pitoresque pictures.

Trastevere

Favorite thing This is a typical building in Trastevere.

Trastevere is a maze of tiny cobblestone streets. For travellers who love wandering through Paris's left bank and stumbling into a little restaurant. THIS is the place for you in Rome. Piazza Egido is a good place to get your bearings and start wandering. If you have been in Italy for a while and need a taste of home... Egido also has 3 screen movie theatre called Pasquino's showing films in ENGLISH!!. (The ticket guy never has change.. so have small bills, and expect movies to be at least 2 months behind)

Trastevere and...

Favorite thing Trastevere and Tevere(river).
See SAint Mary of Trastevere and its magnificient golden works.
The Tevere, the river that cross Rome, cross it by the Isola Tiberina, and get lost on Trastevere, the more tipicall Roman quarter on the city.

TRASTEVERE
Trastevere is at...

Favorite thing TRASTEVERE
Trastevere is at its best on a sleepy Sunday morning when the pox of weekday traffic has miraculously cleared and the neon signs have been turned off. Sunday is also the morning of the flea market called Porta Portese. Expensive antiques and matrioshka dolls share pavement space with single shoes, marble busts of Mussolini, African handicrafts, and even the occasional genuine bargain. The smells of sausage and chestnuts and spicy porchetta (roast pork) hover over the whole glorious mess.
Porta Portese market. Open: Sunday 7am -1pm best entrance; viale di Trastevere & via Ippolito Nievo
