Il Vero Alfredo: Ticking a box for a bit of history

by Paisleypaul Written Jul 19, 2015

Well....there is absolutely NO reason never to go here , where the current owner's grandfather invented pasta Alfredo. There is an extensive menu , but we found NO reason to order other than the original Alfredo.

Well - we've done it, but it is just the first, basic, unembellished Alfedo, variants with blackened chicken and chopped peppers are our preference, but still would not say it was a letdown. Would say having done it, can see NO reason not to go there again if we happened upon it on one of our many meanderings in Rome, but can see equally why having done it once we wold be inclined to go out of our way to return

Favorite Dish: We both had the original Alfredo, with white wine and bread.

Spend some time looking at the the pictures of generations of owners with sporting and silver screen legends, prime ministers presidents and royalty

Address: Piazza Augusto Imperatore, 30, 00186 Roma

Directions: By the mausoleum of Imperatore Agosto, between there and Via Corso, almost on a straight line from Spagna and Ponte Cavour

We LOVED this restaurant! It was amazing! Not only is it the BEST fettucini alfredo you will ever eat but the waiters are really amazing! The decor is very nice as well! It is a little bit classier and fancy so we dressed up a bit for dinner. The waiters were very nice and helpful also not snotty at all! YOU HAVE TO GO HERE IF YOU ARE GOING TO ROME!!!

Favorite Dish: We only had the Fettucini Afredo

Alfredo's: It's only cheese, pasta and butter!

by johnaalex Written Sep 1, 2008

This place as being the restaurant where they invented Fettuccine Alfredo. I am sure the story the waiter goes at great lengths to tell is true, but to my mind there is the possibility that Alfredo dropped a load of cheese on his pasta by accident rather than deisgn.

Favorite Dish: Fettuccine Alfredo is practically forced upon you as a starter. Beware the serving is very big and is easily a starter for 4 (and I don't do small portions). The mixing of cheese and pasta is done table side to add to the theatre of the whole deal.

To be honest I was not that impressed.

    Alfredo's: Funtime with the stars

This is a great place for pasta. Alfredo's is where the famous 'fettucine alfredo' was invented.
Dont be surprised to see people you recognise from the movies or world politiics. The restaurant buzzes with life and a good time is had by all.

Favorite Dish: Fettucine Alfredo. Invented in 1914, when the owner's wife fell pregnant and would not eat.
Alfredo rushed into the kitchen and whipped up some egg noodles with parmigiano and butter. Even his wife could'nt resist

HISTORY OF ALFREDO DI LELIO CREATOR IN 1908 OF “FETTUCCINE ALL’ALFREDO” (“FETTUCCINE ALFREDO”), NOW SERVED BY HIS NEPHEW INES DI LELIO, AT THE RESTAURANT “IL VERO ALFREDO” – “ALFREDO DI ROMA” IN ROME, PIAZZA AUGUSTO IMPERATORE 30

With reference of your article (for which I thank you), I have the pleasure to tell you the history of my grandfather Alfredo Di Lelio, who is the creator of “Fettuccine all’Alfredo” (“Fettuccine Alfredo”) in 1908 in the “trattoria” run by his mother Angelina in Rome, Piazza Rosa (Piazza disappeared in 1910 following the construction of the Galleria Colonna / Sordi). This “trattoria” of Piazza Rosa has become the “birthplace of fettuccine all’Alfredo”.
More specifically, as is well known to many people who love the “fettuccine all’Alfredo", this famous dish in the world was invented by Alfredo Di Lelio concerned about the lack of appetite of his wife Ines, who was pregnant with my father Armando (born February 26, 1908).
Alfredo di Lelio opened his restaurant “Alfredo” in 1914 in Rome and in 1943, during the war, he sold the restaurant to others outside his family.
In 1950 Alfredo Di Lelio decided to reopen with his son Armando his restaurant in Piazza Augusto Imperatore n.30 "Il Vero Alfredo" (“Alfredo di Roma”), whose fame in the world has been strengthened by his nephew Alfredo and that now managed by me, with the famous “gold cutlery” (fork and spoon gold) donated in 1927 by two well-known American actors Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks (in gratitude for the hospitality).
See also the website of “Il Vero Alfredo”.

I must clarify that other restaurants "Alfredo" in Rome (as Alfredo alla scrofa or Alfredo’s gallery) do not belong to my brand "Il Vero Alfredo – Alfredo di Roma".
I inform you that the restaurant “Il Vero Alfredo –Alfredo di Roma” is in the registry of “Historic Shops of Excellence” of the City of Rome Capitale.
    Best regards Ines Di Lelio
