Fountain of the Four Rivers
Commissioned by Pope Innocenzo X, the Fountain of the Four Rivers is a monumental masterpiece situated in Piazza Navona, Rome. Completed in 1651, it serves as a tribute to the four major rivers of the world as known at the time.
Designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini, this classical 17th-century fountain features four statues representing the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Plate, alongside an Egyptian obelisk crowned with a dove. Notably, the figure of the Nile shields its eyes, a gesture believed to reflect Bernini's rivalry with Borromini's adjacent Chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone. The fountain’s grandeur is further complemented by intricate details and allegorical symbolism.
