Originating in the 4th century, the mask may depict Oceanus and was possibly used as a drain cover for the Temple of Hercules Victor. It now resides in the portico of a medieval church, built in the 8th century, revamped in the 12th century with a bell tower and atmospheric Cosmati flooring.
