The Spiritual Journey of Scala Santa
Scala Santa, part of the Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs in Rome, draws thousands of pilgrims annually. Traditionally, these stairs are thought to be the ones Jesus ascended before his trial.
These 28 white marble steps were brought to Rome by Saint Helena in the 4th century. They lead to the Sancta Sanctorum, the personal chapel of the popes, and are surrounded by rich frescoes depicting biblical narratives and saints, commissioned during Pope Sixtus V’s project, completed in 1590.
