Sacro Monte of Varese Unesco World Heritage Site Walking Tour
"Meet your group and local guide at the First Chapel then ascend the mountain to see the 14 Chapels representing Jesus's life. Your guide will share the history of each chapel as you travel for 1.5-hours along a 2 km (approximately 1 mile) cobblestone pat the group will visit the permanent Presepe followed by the Sanctuary which is a little gem of baroque art. The guide will show the group the wooden statue of the Black Madonna (30 min). After the Sanctuary spend about 30 minutes visiting the little village of Santa Maria del Monte where it is possible to see mural paintings and stunning views from the windows of typical underpasses. There will be a brief rest stop at the Emporio Shop where visitors can sample local products and do some shopping. Walk through the labyrinth of typically narrow streets some of them built over the rock and cliff right above the water and enjoy a breathtaking view. Then you will drive all the way up to Valtellina which is a valley located in the Lombardy region (northern Italy) that begins right at the top of lake Como. Your guide will drive as much as possible off the main roads so that you can go through some tiny and pristine villages clinging to the mountains. You will stop for lunch (local wine included)
