Sirmione, Lago di Garda
The historic center is located on the peninsula of Sirmione in Lake Garda. Just outside the city walls there a few parking lots to park your car. If you walk owards Sirmione from the parking lot the Castello Rocca Scaligera immidiately draws the attention. It was built somewhere in the 15th century.
The few little streets are very rustic and cosy with some shop and hotels.
At the end you'll find some excavations of a roman villa named " Le Grotte di Catullo " dating back to the 1st century.
Don't forget to eat some ice at one of the lovely ice cream parlors.
Address: TIC at Viale Marconi 2
Sirmione is one or probably the most famous place in Lago di Garda. So many tourists and so many nice shops (all type of shops and more...more than one can immagine). This is Castello Rocca Scaligera, which is the first thing you see as you arrive in Sirmione! We arrived there with a bus from Verona! It was a great idea to visit this wonderful place. To visit Catello Rocca Scaligera you have to pay a small fee of 4 euros! It's worth it beleive me. You will have great pictures there and not to mention the views and panoramas one can enjoy! Be sure to bring an extra film if you don't have a digital camera!! :P Do view all my 5 pictures to have an idea of having some original photos. I thought it would be nice and of interest for you to scan and paste even a copy of the ticket which i still conserve in my album for visiting this wonderful castle!

When visiting Lago di Garda, Grotte di Catullo is a must see. It is the most important historic sight in the area of the lake.
The huge complex of Grotte di Catullo is situated on the top of the peninsula of Sirmione. It displays the remains of the Roman villa which is believed to belonged to the famous Roman poet Catullo.
Directions: The complex is situated on the top of the peninsula. You can reach it by walk or by the small electric train.
Sirmione is situated at he bottom end of Lake Garda and juts out into the lake on a thin peninsula.
A Scaglieri castle dominates the town like so many other resorts on Lake Garda. Can be congested in the narrow streets of the pedestrianised town centre but more space and views to be enjoyed on the panoramic path and through the olive groves to the Catullo grotto at the end of the peninsula.
Lots more info on my Sirmione page
Friday morning before the meeting, we had planned to visit the rest of the lake we did not had time the previous day (there is so much to see!!).
I was very impress with Sirmioni, not only because we love visiting Roman ruins (Ok I know I am in Italy what do you expect!! But we have many in Spain and we enjoy visiting them for its culture that travelled along Europe, also the first ones to invent tourism!). But this ruins were even more impressive due to its location. Romean new very well how to choose the best places to them!
Sirmione it is on the south centre area of the Lake Garda a narrow long peninsula with incredible views all over it of the lake and the mountains. If you are lucky as us to get a beautiful sunny day …. You will understand why I loved it.
But do not visit only the grottoes, just enjoy yourself walking along the medieval little streets or just around the peninsula through the path along the beach. Just wonderful!
Sirmione is probably the most beautiful place on Lago di Garda, if not, it is undoubtely the best known. It is situated on a small peninsula immerged deeply in the watre of Lago di Garda. On the top of the peninsula there are Grotte di Catullo, very important and significant remnants from the Roman times.
There is very compact structure behind the Castle walls with narrow streets and cute little squares, just like this one on the picture.
The Castle Scaligero, built from 1308 to 1329 as an project of the famous Cangarnde, is the emblem of the town of Sirmione. During the medieval times it was the seat of the Scala Family, the lords of Verona, Vicenza and the huge surrounding area of this two cities.
It is day and night open for the visitors, no admission, and offers an great sightseeing of Lago di Garda.

This is the part of the Castle inside the walls, actually the main entrance into the Castle town. The master of the Castle usually stayed here together with his family and most devoted subjects. The whole this space was additionally protected by the water-canals around the building.
The beach of Sirmione is very beautiful, clean, pebbled and with such clear water. There is a wonderful view at the surrounding mountains, and just behind the beach there is a castle of Sirmione, which makes the swimming or strolling very picturesque!
Sirmione is a very beautiful town at the bottom of lake Garda, on the small peninsula, barely 500m wide :) It stretches out into the lake and it is the place of famous terme of sulphur and thermal water, beautiful castle and lovely parks and villas.
The castle is a typical medieval fort, with tall "teethed" towers and a port within the bulwark, as well as the wooden bridges that can be lifted, and dungeons :)) To climb up the castle, you need to pay an admission fee of 4 euros, and then the castle is yours! The stairs are wooden and VERY steep (especially the top ones), so watch out! But the view is amazing!
Sirmione is situated on a very thin, north pointing 2.5km long peninsula, at the southen end of Lake Garda.
This ancient town has charmed people for centuries, as it does today with the many tourists who visit. The buildings of the town are all very brightly painted, giving the town a slight Murano & Burano feel to the place .
The dominating castle in Sirmione was built by the Lord of Verona in 1250 AD, Castello Scaligero. Open from 09.00 to 19.00.
Directions: South of Lake Garda
An ideal location. Which other place is free from through traffic and yet linked to the main motorways? Sirmione.
Not only Catullus, but also Caesaris is said to have stayed here.
In the 8th Century, the Longobards built a convent, Dante came looking for inspiration, Carducci and Boito spent meaningful hours here.....
The Romans had built two castles, two harbours, a settlement and the gigantic villa that rises on rocks and powerfully towers on the lake.
On the fundations of the old eastern harbour, the Scaligers later built their famous fortress: a charming, graceful yet strong and imposing bultwark, one of the most beautiful buildings in the word.
Sirmione, however, is something more.....
Sirmione, spa and resort, spirit and culture, restaurants and refind discotheques, thermal baths and outstanding hotels, gastronomy and pizza, excellent wine, markets and fashion shops, the International Academy for Literature, Lunapark and Gardaland - a child's paradise - the meeting point of tradition and future....
Sirmione is a well known tourist centre and popular health resort. It is reached by a long road (the only road in to it) Next to the entrance to the town is the Scagliera Fortress, a thirteenth century building surrounded by water. It has it's own boatyard and a fortress.
It is a place of history with beautiful churches and stunning scenery across the lake.
It is buzzing with life and the restaurants are always busy. It's narrow streets house many small shops and plenty of ice cram parlours.
Sirmione has easy access to the rest of the lake by the ferries which run frequently.
Directions: South part of Lago Di Garda.
A five mile walk from Desenzano!!!!
On the southern shores of the lake, you will find this charming place. Sirmione definitely worth a visit.
