Unique Structure of Battistero
The Battistero, founded on 15 August 1152, serves as a pivotal site for administering the Sacrament of Baptism in Christian tradition. The impressive structure was constructed to complement the nearby cathedral, showcasing harmony in size and design.
This round baptistery features an extraordinary double dome, half covered in lead and half in tiles, crowned with a gilt bronze statue of John the Baptist, completed in 1395. The building commenced in the 12th century but was later remodeled by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, finishing in the 14th century. The hexagonal marble pulpit, dating from 1260, designed by Nicola Pisano, serves as a focal point inside, while the lower arcades reflect Pisan-Romanesque architecture, contrasted by a Gothic upper section.
