About 100 km from Rīga, in Vidzeme region, direction to Valmiera, I’m going to find lavender fields. In the middle of July, every year, they have organizing lavender festival, as I read not the first year, and they have started to grow the fields almost four of five years ago. The name of the field and company is called Lillas Lavender and it’s proprietors are very ambitious couple, to her it was a dream to grow lavender fields in Latvia.
It may sound very typical - just lavender fields but it’s not typical thing for Latvia. Because it’s very difficult to grow lavender in our latitude, we have short summers and very cold and moist winters.
There were too many people attending this event and mostly everyone tried to take photos in magic and good smelling fields. It was offered to buy here lavender candles, soaps, oils and ready to take with you bunch of lavenders.
Another field is in Kurzeme region but comparing to this one it is very very small.
During festival entrance fee was free of charge.
Directions: going from Rīga to Valmiera, in Stalbe turn to the left to Limbaži. You’ll see Lillas Lavender on the left side, after 14 km.

Hike from Veczemu klintis (sandstone rock) to Kurmrags (cape)
This rather easy seaside hiking trail is one of the best in Latvia in my opnion. Veczemu klintis are located some 30 km from Limbazi. You must go with car or bicycle from P11 (Limbazi-Tuja) and A1/E67 (Riga-Ainazi) intersection to the North and after 8km turn to the left and then after few km you will reach the sea. There will be very simple campsite (you will have to pay for parking the car) and there you can start your hike. At first go about 1 km north to Veczemu klintis – red sandstone rock. Then go back and keep going South some 4 or 5 km till Kurmrags where very simple lighthouse is located (see my last picture). All the way along the seaside you will pass very beautiful red, pink or white sandstone rocks (not very high – only few metres high). You can also watch many seabirds while walking. If you have left your car or bycicles at campsite you will have to walk back. The hike takes few hours and I strongly advise you against hiking there any other season, but summer (as well as during storm in summer). In spring, autumn and winter the wind can be extremely cold (and strong) and you will get sick very fast. If you need any other information feel free to contact me since there could be very little or no information in guide books or internet about this place.
