4 days marches Tips (17)

4 days marches

Friday July 22, 2005
i was here again but only to pass the 4 days marches, big trafficproblem in and around Nijmegen, took us a long time to get out of the city but great to see.

Monday - July 17, 2000.
I went to Nijmegen to the NAC stadion with the guests from Concorde USA called 'The Blue Devils' a drumcorps.
(They stayed as guests at the sportcentre i worked for at Eindhoven).

We went with 2 militairy busses to the so called '4-daagse' event.
There was a great opening ceremony to Holland’s soccer season.
Military was in full force as you could not turn in any direction without seeing a uniformed serviceman.
As the festivity's got under way the stadium was treated to a dozen paratroopers falling from the sky aiming for a bright neon pink cross in the middle of the soccer field.
The corps could not do the full field show because they did not want to put lines on the field, so we did a concert for the crowd.
There was probably over 30,000 people who enjoyed the performance by The Blue Devils.

I had a fantastic time at the stadion and the music was great!!
more info about the drumcorps

Pity i dont have a picture from the drumcorps playing at Nijmegen

Men and women from all over the world will walk for four days (30, 40 or 50 kilometers) - hence the name Four Days Marches. On Friday, they will enter Nijmegen from the south and walk along St. Annastraat, were they will be greeted by their relatives and friends and the inhabitants of Nijmegen. The gladiolus (plural: gladioli) is by far the most popular flower to present to the participants in the Four Days Marches, it's an old tradition ...

4 Days Marches

The 4 Days Marches. A temporary military camp at Heumensoord to accommodate Dutch and foreign soldiers participating in this international event. We had a peek on a Sunday afternoon while the camp was being installed. Notice the flagposts from which will fly the flags of all the participating nations.

4 Day's Marches.

And this is one of the things that makes Nijmegen famous in the world, The 4 day's March.
Every year in the month July is here de Vierdaagse mars. From all over the world come here almost 40.000 peoples walking, distances 30-40 or 50 km each day.
At the end of the four days there are several 100.000 spectators who makes it one big party for the walkers who make the 4 days.
Family and friends gives a lot of flowers for the prestation. And one of the biggest streets in Nijmegen de Annastraat is called that last day of the march, Via Gladiola.
That week is the whole week a party week , with a lot of bands en groups which you can visit for free. And the whole centre is one big terrace.
