Favorite thing: Citizens from outside the European Union can shop tax-free in Amsterdam. The shops that offer tax-free shopping will advertise with a sign in the window, and they will provide you with the form you need to recover the value-added tax (VAT) when you leave the country.

**See under Shopping Tips for more information on the VAT refund.
